Mazen Darwish is a Syrian lawyer and free speech advocate, and the president of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (CMFE), founded in 2004. In 2011, Darwish established Media Club, the first Syrian magazine about media affairs. News organizations including Reuters and the Associated Press have described him as one of Syria’s most prominent activists. Mr Darwish was in prison in Syria from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, he was awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on World Press Freedom Day.
