SUMMARY:Grønlands Maidan: Home Not for Sale.
DESCRIPTION:Street Party Against the Gentrification of Grønland\n  \nPractical Information\n📍 Meeting point: Botsparken → ending at Olafiagangen🕛 Time: 12:00–16:00🌿 Open to all — free public event \n  \nA festival day of ritual\, people’s march\, stories of solidarity and resistance\, textile workshops\, games\, and music in the streets of Grønland. \nGrønland is Oslo’s cultural crossroads—a neighborhood where diverse communities and newcomers from Norway and across the world have lived\, worked\, and thrived for generations. Today\, greedy developers and their political enablers threaten to erase this history\, displace communities\, and sell our streets to the highest bidder. \nWe say no. \nJoin us at Olafiagangen for a day of celebration and solidarity—because the soul of a neighborhood lives in its people. \n\nThe march starts 12:00 at Botsparken. It ends 12:30 at Olafiagangen with speeches from Reduser Husleia\, Leieboerforeningen and Nordic Black Theatre. \nWe march to protect Grønland from the growing pressure of real estate speculation: higher rents\, unstable leases\, and gentrification that risks pushing away families\, businesses\, and organizations that have long been the heart of this neighborhood. \nArtist Waldane Walker will guide us through a powerful MAS (masquerade)\, leading a ritual procession to cleanse the neighborhood from greedy developers and city planners who seek to displace us by building homes only for those who can afford them. \n✨ March with us\, raise your voice in the chants\, and help protect the soul of Grønland from gentrification.💚 Come show your love for the neighborhood. \n\n  \nProgram\n📍 Start: Botsparken → End: Olafiagangen🕛 Time: 12:00–16:00 \n\nBotsparken → Olafiagangen\n12:00–12:30 | Our Home\, Our Neighbourhood: People’s March for GrønlandA march against gentrification\, led by artist Waldane Walker a  MAS (masquerade)\, leading a ritual procession to cleanse the neighborhood from greedy developers. \n\n\nOlafiagangen\n12:30–12:45 | SpeechesWith contributions from Reduser Husleia\, Leieboerforeningen\, and Nordic Black Theatre. \n12:30–16:00 | The Solidarity Patchwork – Threads of ResistanceWith Latin-Amerika Gruppen (LAG Norge). SUMMARY:Troubled Waters: Images from the Arab World
DESCRIPTION:Opening of the exhibition\nPlease join us for the soft opening of the exhibition on 20 Sept 2022\, the opening day of Masahat festival.\n\n\n18.00: Opening Photo Exhibition Troubled Waters Kristparken \n\n\n18.30: Reception.Khartoum Contemporary Art Center. \n\n19.30: walking to TootArd concert. Ingensteds.\n\n  \nDuring the festival week 20-25 September\, you will be able to experience the exhibition in different outdoor areas around Oslo. See here the map of the exhibition. The four locations are Kristparken\, the green area around Kulturkirken Jakob\, Kubaparken\, and Bjørvika. \n  \nTroubled Waters: Images from the Arab World is an outdoor exhibition addressing the prospects of just transitions and climate justice given the environmental degradation affecting the Arab world today. It speaks about the flow of capital and people and the hierarchy of geographies between a Global North and a Global South\, determined through modern financial\, industrial\, and extractive coloniality. Photo essays produced by four Arab photographers –Nadia Bseiso (Jordan)\, Tamara Saadé (Lebanon)\, Roger Anis (Egypt) and Seif Kousmate (Morocco)– will occupy four locations in the city of Oslo\, creating an inevitable discussion between imagined landscapes\, the reality of Oslo\, and counterpart cities in the south. Despite these North and Southern cities having no immediate formal correlation\, at first sight\, it shows the contrasts between environments while encouraging a rethinking of a shared responsibility towards the Planet. \nPeople from the Arab world have periodically taken to the streets in the past decades due to degradation producing poverty through economies of extractivism carried out by colonial and authoritarian powers. The exhibition Troubled Waters\, part of Masahat’s annual festival for Arab arts and culture\, seeks to cultivate an arena for mutual inspiration and exchange amongst Norwegian and Arab scholars\, activists\, and artists who are concerned with ecological politics in order to contribute to shaping tools capable of carrying solidaristic concerns to tear down colonial structures\, authoritarian regimes and their ideology. \nThe installations for the exhibition are designed by artist Frido Evers. \nThe exhibition is produced by Masahat in collaboration with Fotogalleriet\, AFAC and Khartoum Contemporary Art Center. The project has been made possible through grants and support from Oslo City\, Fritt Ord\, KORO (Public Arts Norway)\, and Arts Council Norway. \nPhoto credit: Roger Anis\, “Oh Mysterious Nile… Will You Be Immortal!”\, Egypt\, Arab Documentary Photography Program 2020. \n  \nTroubled Waters (nb) \nTroubled Waters: Images from the Arab World er en utendørs fotoutstilling\, spredt utover forskjellige steder i Oslo.

SUMMARY:Solidarity patchwork: Stories of activism
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to be part of a patchwork that unites stories of global solidarity. \nThe Solidarity Patchwork is an interactive project created by Astrid and Ingrid Fadnes. A big quilt\, consisting of multiple patches\, conveys stories of solidarity connected to the 40th year of The Norwegian Solidarity Committee for Latin America. \nEach contribution visualizes memories and human encounters\, and draws lines to boundless battles. The quilt was created at a time when we have not been able to meet physically\, but through digital art colloquia\, communication via e-mail and patch shipping in the mail\, around 170 activists and LAG members have so far contributed with their stories. Collectively\, the patches form a larger narrative\, composed of all the small narratives of solidarity. \nThe quilt will be exhibited during week 44 in Kunstplass\, and the audience will be able to navigate the different stories of solidarity. \nThe audience are also invited to participate in the artwork\, through two workshops. \nThis event is organized in collaboration with Oslo World\, LAG\, Kunstplass and Masahat. \nWorkshop facilitator\nLise Bjørne Linnert’s works are conceptual and process based\, often anchored in the political and social. Since 2006\, Linnert has worked on the project Desconocida/Unknown/Ukjent. The names of the many women who are murdered or simply vanished in Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico are embroidered on small patches\, presented together in a monumental installation – a memorial of the victims. \n \nWorkshop 1: Understanding the tools: crafts and protest\nSaturday 30. October 14.00 – Kunstplass \nWorkshop 2: Amplifying the voices and sewing: Stories behind each patchwork\nSunday 31. October 14.00 – Kunstplass \n\nSign up

SUMMARY:Through Solidarity We Survive
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn open air city exhibition by Syrian artists in the diaspora\, reacting to the effects of the pandemic. The artwork is exhibited in four place in Oslo: Youngstorget\, Sørenga\, Sankthanshaugen and Kulturkirken Jakob. \nThe rapid and unexpected spread of COVID-19 has affected every detail of our life\, challenging everything we thought of as stable and unchangeable. While people have sought to unite in the face of a hidden common “enemy\,” the pandemic has also strengthened a sense of crisis in our social and political systems. If the current crisis has revealed essential flaws in our systems\, it is an opportunity to fundamentally question who we are and where we are going. \nArtists and cultural producers play a critical role in providing alternative spaces\, which are cornerstones in navigating the ongoing transformations of a crisis. Indeed\, culture is the essence of who we are as human beings: it establishes our collective social lives\, binds us together\, and nurtures our sense of belonging beyond borders. It is difficult to envision the future as a joint endeavor of human civilization without it.\nThe posters in the ‘Through Solidarity\, We Survive’ exhibition are responses to the current situation. They stem from two separate initiatives: An open call by coculture inviting Syrian artists in diaspora to create a dialogue-based artwork reacting to the pandemic\, and the Artist Training Program by the UdK Berlin Career College. Alongside the UdK Berlin demonstration KUNST RAUM STADT exhibition\, coculture and UdK presented the artworks in public spaces (e.g. windows\, balconies\, billboards\, walls\, etc.) throughout Berlin as a city campaign this summer. During Oslo World the posters will be exhibited in a city campaign all over Oslo. \nArtists participating in the exhibition:\nAlaa Hamameh\, Ammar Hatem\, Ammar Khattab\, Diala Brisly\, Fadi Aljabour\, Fahed Halabi\, Michaele Daoud\, Nada Ali\, Nagham Hamoush\, Nour Safadi\, Razan Sabbagh\, Ruba Salameh\, Tamer Mallak\, Yaser Kassab\, Yerevan Hassan\, Zena El Abdalla \nThis exhibition is in collaboration with SPACE\, Oslo World and Fotogalleriet and is courtesy of coculture which has selected and exhibited the artwork in Berlin last summer. \nSupported by Oslo Municipality and Fritt Ord.

SUMMARY:Flowers from the Rubble: Remembering Raed Fares
DESCRIPTION:At this year’s Oslo Freedom Forum\, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF)\, in partnership with The Syria Campaign\, SPACE\, and Vega Scene\, will feature an experiential exhibition in honor of Raed Fares\, a Syrian pro-democracy activist\, citizen journalist\, and civil society leader who was assassinated in November 2018 in Idlib\, north-west Syria. \nFares was a speaker at the 2017 Oslo Freedom Forum. Two years later\, we are honoring his work and what he stood for with a memorial while highlighting the importance of independent reporting in conflict zones like Syria\, and the role independent media can play in countering extremist narratives. \n“Flowers from the Rubble: Remembering Raed Fares” will be on display at Vega Scene\, and open during operating hours. \nThe exhibition will allow viewers to experience the world of Raed Fares\, from the war-torn village where he lived to the darkest places in Syria where he reported on the ground from\, mobilized peaceful protests\, and to his office where he ran Radio Fresh\, a local radio station that continues to provide Syrians with access to unbiased reporting and that counters the fundamentalist narratives of the Bashar al-Assad regime’s propaganda and extremist groups. \nViewers will also learn how Fares succeeded in building the foundation of a strong civil society and how he managed to inspire and draw the world’s attention to his tiny\, otherwise unknown village. \nWithin the exhibition will be protest banners that brought Fares and his town to the world’s attention; caricatures and videos that Fares and his colleagues created to mock the Assad regime and ISIS; audio recordings from Radio Fresh\, including the airstrike announcements used to warn town residents of incoming attacks; artwork by various Syrian artists depicting the Syrian conflict; photography of the training centers that Fares built; and the speech that Fares delivered at from the 2017 Oslo Freedom Forum stage. \nFree entrance but reserving a ticket is required.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Aleppo: Revolutionary Culture
DESCRIPTION:Long before March 2011\, Syria was known as the “kingdom of silence”. All forms of artistic and public expression were controlled by the regime\, only those who mastered the regime’s censorship rule-book managed to sneak in their subtle message through the many red lines. From the outset of the uprising against tyranny in 2011\, public expression and art became a daily practice. Self-expression has been\, in essence\, the motor of the uprising; the creative spirit of the Syrian people was unleashed by the wave of protests around the country popularizing art and culture to become a defining face of the protest movement. But where are we today? With the population facing endless repression and the world seeming increasingly indifferent\, is art still a powerful tool for Syrians? \n  \nSpanish-Syrian professor and activist Leila Nachawati Rego will reflect on culture and communication in times of repression\, revolution and war\, with a special focus on Aleppo\, “the Syrian Gernika”. \n  \n \nLeila Nachawati is a Spanish-Syrian writer and storyteller. She is a Professor of Communications at Madrid’s Carlos III University. She is co-founder of the news portal on Syrian civil society SyriaUntold and has just published her first novel on citizen mobilisations and the Arab Spring\, Cuando la revolución termine. \n\n  \n  \n \nMarius Von Der Fehr is a Norwegian artist and writer based in Norway and Spain. He works with socially and politically engaged practices. He runs the international event series New Frontiers/Nuevas Fronteras. One of his last works\, the controversial National Apology (in cooperation with Pia Maria Roll) confronted the use of culture as a tool for whitewashing Israel’s violent policies. \n\n  \n  \nEvent picture: Dancing in the Streets of Death by Wissam al-Jazairy
