SUMMARY:Haya Zaatry (solo concert) / Blå
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets | لشراء البطاقات\n \nHaya Zaatry’s musical origins stem from acoustic folk\, blending with Arabic musical inflections\, imbibed in the cities that nurtured her: Nazareth and Haifa. \nA self- taught musician and practicing architect\, Zaatry began her musical career with the much lauded “Manakir” (nail varnish) in 2013\, which was featured in 2021 on the Netflix “AlRawabi School For Girls”. \nHer debut album “Rahawan” which addresses intimacies of memory\, space\, gender and time\, was released in 2022\, bringing with it North African influences of electric guitars and groovy flows\, while reverberating the warmth of the indigenous sounds of Haya’s surroundings through percussions\, modal inflections and original field recordings turning spaces of memory into musical markers. \nInspired by Haya Zaatry’s great-great grandmother’s surname\, Rahawan is an album transcending the complicated threads of history\, time and geography and paying tribute to generations of mothers and matriarchs. \nNazira Rahawan (1972-1890) who lends her name to the album was born and raised in Damascus (Syria) and lived between Nazareth and Haifa (Palestine). Nazira was the last person within Haya’s family who lived and roamed the land freely\, before the forceful imposition of man made borders. \nThe album is conceptually designed to reclaim a sense of freedom and belonging which Haya Zaatry herself never had the chance to experience. \nThis concert is in collaboration with AFAC and the Palestinian Committee in Norway. \n\nBuy tickets | لشراء البطاقات

SUMMARY:Al Rosanna Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Al Rosanna Dinner: A Levantine culinary odyssey\n\nBuy tickets لشراء البطاقات\n \nWhat does Ibsen’s “Terje Vigen” poem have to do with Al Rosanna and the great famine of Lebanon (1915-1918)? How does food history contribute to our grand national narratives? Can recipes\, food stories\, and memories offer an alternative view to our national imagination? Can we think of the recipes we use and the food we eat as a way to consider how our pasts and futures are connected beyond borders and nation states? \nThese questions and the stories around them are the backdrop of our dinner. \nJoin us at Al Rosanna Dinner for a unique culinary journey that transcends time and space. Step into a world of exquisite flavors as we sail in memory from Røst in north Norway all the way to Beirut to experience the rich heritage of the Levant. \nAl Rosanna Dinner will serve you history\, flavors\, aromas and melodies from Norway\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Palestine and Iraq. Palestinian chef Thurayya Alkury and Norwegian author and cook Andreas Delsett present their own interpretation of the myths of Al Rosanna and Terje Vigen. \n  \nYour ticket includes: \n\nSix-course dinner\nFood weaved with storytelling and music\nMeeting and mingling with Masahat festival guests*\nEntrance to solo concert by Haya Zaatry + club night (DJ Set) by Leila Moon ++ at Blå following the dinner\nPrint-out of a medieval recipe\, retrieved from one of the earliest cook books in history\n\n  \nMenu\n\nBaghdad: Cheese Boreg – savory pastry with side of bitter orange jam\nBeirut: Yalanji – wrapped grape leaves with fresh herbs\nRøst: Fish and grain snack\nAleppo: Fattet Makdous – layered eggplant with crisp bread\, minced lamb meat\, yogourt and pomegranate sauce\nSafad: Walnut Kullaj – sweet pastry served with dried apricot pure\nBack in the times: surprise medieval dish\nBring your own drink!\n\n  \nThe name of the dinner is inspired by Al Rosana\, a popular Levantine folk song which has been recorded over and over by some of the greatest Arab artists of the 20th century\, each giving it a unique flavor. The origins of the story of the song are conflicting and intertwined. \nWe were mostly inspired by Nur Turkmani’s article about Al Rosana “A famine\, a ship and a folk song that spanned borders“ where she writes how oral narratives allow us to reclaim and rewrite histories once silenced by colonialism\, patriarchy and other authoritarian powers. \nSome say Al Rosana (or Rozana) is a large ship that carried food from Italy to Lebanon during Lebanon’s great famine 1916-1918. Others say it carried smuggled wheat from Aleppo merchants to Beirut. Another version of the story revolves around a tragic love story that started in Safad\, Palestine or Mosul in Iraq and ended up in a song in Aleppo. \nSimilar to how Turkmani’s versions of Al Rosana offer new perspectives to view our interconnected pasts and futures\, so do some new critical readings of Norwegian myths\, such as the one of The Norwegian anthropologist Runar Døving who takes a new critical historical reading of the the grand tale of “Terje Vigen”. In this dinner\, we also go back further in time to think about the story of the Italian sailing captain\, Pietro Querini\, who was shipwrecked in Røst in North Norway\, and how\, as he sailed back to Venice\, he took back with him the inspiration to introduce Stockfish into Italian cooking. \nTurkmani goes on to cite Rabih Alameddine in his novel “The Hakawati\,”—or “the storyteller” as he writes: “What happens is of little significance compared with the stories we tell ourselves about what happens. Events matter little\, only stories of events affect us.” \nAl Rosana\, and the many versions of its origin\, are the inspiration for our six-course dinner. \nCome on board\, and as we indulge in the tapestry of Levantine culinary treasures\, let’s re-create and re-tell the stories of our pasts and futures.

SUMMARY:Toumba (DJ set) / Blå
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets | لشراء البطاقات \nBorn and raised in Jordan\, DJ and producer Yazan Zyadat\, aka Toumba\, is now based in London\, where he fashions lithe club bangers that melt Middle Eastern elements with dubstep basslines and clattering breaks. Last year he experienced a flurry of interest when Ben UFO’s Hessle Audio label released his “Petals” EP and Zyadat was able to broadcast his unique sounds on a larger platform. Tonally ambitious and deviously percussive\, his music takes the essence of Arabic tarab and shelat forms (often seen as wedding music) and dilutes it in a dance floor-ready roil of booming bass and dissociated synths. \nSupporting acts: DJ Daeva opening + 𒀭unnaki closing \n— \nDaeva /opening/ \nNasim aka Daeva is an Oslo-based artist and DJ born and raised in Tehran. Since 2004\, Daeva has featured heavily on Oslo’s club and festival scene\, via Cosmopolite\, Blå\, Khartoum\, Dattera\, the National Museum\, Riksscenen\, the Munch Museum\, Mela Festival\, Oslo Pride and much more. She plays rhythms from all corners of the world with extra emphasis on the Middle East\, the African continent and South America. \n— \n𒀭unnak /closing/ \n𒀭unnaki (read: Anunnaki) explores the origins of mystics through his music. He’ll take you on a stroll at your ancestral graveyard. There you’ll hear heavy kicks\, tappy drums and light symphonies meshed in together with a taste of a tribal belonging. 𒀭unnaki stands behind several underground concepts and has performed at Ingensteds\, Evrysome\, Melahuset\, Baba Bar and intimate festivals

SUMMARY:Masahat 2023 åpningskonsert: TARABBAND
DESCRIPTION:-20:00 doors open \n-20:30 concert \nTARABBAND is coming to Oslo for the first time to open Masahat festival 2023! \nThe band’s name comes from the Arabic word Tarab\, meaning “ecstasy through music”– and we promise you a no less thrilling concert than what the name reveals! \nJoin us on Thursday\, 21 September at Melahuset and get ready to immerse yourself in a cross-cultural musical experience\, sung in universal Arabic lyrics and performed with a fusion of folk and Middle Eastern melodies that make you want to leap out of your chair and dance. \nTarabband is a six-member group founded in 2008 by Iraqi-Egyptian Nadin Al khalidi and Swedish Gabriel Hermansson in Malmö\, Sweden. With Nadin Al Khalidi’s charismatic and sensitive voice\, Tarabband music takes off from Malmö\, travels via Paris and the Mediterranean to Cairo and Baghdad creating the band’s original compositions and sound. \nThe group’s front figure and vocalist Nadin Al khalidi fled from Iraq in 2001 arriving to Sweden as a refugee. Her lyrics merge political and social topics along with questions around identity\, survival and love. \nA unique live band with influences from North Africa\, the Middle East and Europe – parts of the world where they have reaped enormous success\, this year Tarabband is celebrating their 15th year anniversary with their fifth album “Yekhaf” – Arabic for “afraid of me”. “Yekhaf” is based on human encounters and situations that the singer and lyricist Nadin Al Khalidi has been involved with in recent years. The texts in Arabic weave together stories about people and life’s destinies that are going on in parallel in different corners of the world – in Malmö\, in the Jordanian Wadi Rum mountains\, in Iraqi Mosul\, in Cairo and in Baghdad\, where Nadin was born and grew up. \nWhen the musicians in Tarabband meet\, they together create vibrant and touching soundscapes that invite you to dance\, feel and think of the stories behind the lyrics and the melodies. \nThis concert is in collaboration with Melahuset \n.

SUMMARY:TootArd
\nDJ YourGirlDina \nDina Al Makhrami aka YourGirlDina is a Yemeni woman infused by Arabic funk and soul from the 1960-80s with future funk\, chill groovy house and Latin house from the mid 1990s. Dina is a photographer\, graphic designer and co-founder of Floke. Together with other WANA (West Asia and North Africa) women in Oslo\, she represents the unique hybrid sound of homeland. \nBuy tickets

SUMMARY:Malplassert: Musikere i eksil خارج المكان: موسيقيين في المنفى
DESCRIPTION:Limited spaces\, free entrance but booking a ticket is required \nSPACE and Det er hærdt å være araber welcome you to this musical evening at Melahuset. There will be music\, poetry\, conversation and open-mic at the end. \nWhen musicians are forced to leave their homes\, how can they adapt to a new context and audience\, and an alien musical scene? How can they perform in front of an audience that is not theirs? What happens to the content and style of their music? We will discuss these questions with Sallam Nasser and Shbli Saleem\, after we hear some of their beautiful performances. Discussion moderated by Chiara Ayad. \nMusicians: \n\nSallam Nasser: is a lyricist\, rapper and producer. Originally from Haifa\, Palestine\, Sallam Naser was born and raised in the Yarmouk camp in Damascus. With the unrest in Syria\, he sought asylum in Drammen\, Norway\, where he quickly mastered the Norwegian language. In 2019\, Sallam caught the rap scene off guard when he started participating in rap battles against Norwegian rappers\, proving his talent was not limited to his native language.\nShbli Saleem: is an Oud player\, he performed in numerous concerts and festivals in Norway.

SUMMARY:Songs of Separation: Film & Concert
DESCRIPTION:SPACE\, in collaboration with Oslo Dokumentarkino\, Arabiske Filmdager\, Vega Scene and Syrian Doc Days\,  invite you to a mystical evening at Vega Scene on Sept 7th. The evening starts with a film taking us on a timeless journey into the majestic world of music in Syria before the war. The film then chases the paths of three passionate musicians turned refugees as they rebuild their lives in exile. They resort to their love of Sufi music to find meaning in the aftermath of destruction and atrocity. Ibrahim\, one of the musicians featured in the film\, will join us later along with three world-renowned Syrian musicians in a Sufi-inspired concert. \nPROGRAM\n\n18.00 Wajd: Songs of Separation (Film)\n19.30 Q&A with film director\n20.00 Break\n20.30 Songs of Separation (Concert)\n\n  \nWajd: Songs of Separation (Film)\nInspired by the traditional sacred music of Syria\, filmmaker Amar Chebib travelled to Damascus and Aleppo in 2010. Six months later the revolution began\, escalating into a civil war and a humanitarian crisis. Touched by the harrowing experiences of the friends he made\, Wajd transformed into the stories of three musicians turned refugees following them over five years. \nIntimate footage of their daily lives weaved together with bittersweet musical performances\, extremely rare Sufi ceremonies\, and poetic imagery of a pre-war Syria that no longer exists. What unfolds is a cinematic meditation on loss\, yearning\, and faith. \n \nSongs of Separation \nFour prominent Syrian musicians are coming together from Turkey\, the UK\, Denmark as well as Norway to bring you a memorable evening of oriental rhythms fused with Sufi-inspired performance. The concert will revive the Sufi Levantine musical heritage\, featuring Aleppine Qudud (Qudud Halabiya) and classical Arabic Muwashahat\, a centuries-old genre spanning practices from Aleppo to Andulsia. \n\nAbout the Musicians\nIbrahim Muslimani\, now lives in Gaziantep\, Turkey\, was born in Aleppo to a family with a passion for Inshad\, a form of Sufi choral singing. In 2003\, Ibrahim joined Aleppine Inshad groups as a professional Daf player. In 2006\, he started collecting Syrian musical heritage focusing on the orally passed-down\, almost lost musical heritage and the rare Muwashahat\, Qudud\, Maqamat\, rhythms and musical manuscripts and records. In 2012\, he fled to Turkey where he further cultivated his passion for traditional music. He got a certificate in the essentials of classical Turkish music from the Directorate of Culture in Gaziantep\,Turkey. Ibrahim is still studying the essentials of musical theories\, rhythms and maqamat of the Ottoman Music\, Oud playing and ethos of music with the master Mohammad Saif Addin Zein Al-Abedin. He is a co-founder and CEO of “Nefes Institution for Arts and Culture”. \n\nRihab Azar\, now lives in the UK\, was born in Homs\, Syria to a musical family. Her father\, luthier Samir Azar made her first oud and started teaching her when she was 7 years old. She continued her musical quest later at the Conservatoire of Damascus and was taught by masters of the oud in Syria. The influences at the Conservatoire included Azerbaijani\, Arabic\, Turkish and Western classical music. In 2014\, She became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music. Rihab was the oud player of the “Syrian Female Oriental Takht” from 2006 until 2015\, the year in which she moved to the UK to study Music Education at University College London. Arts Council England recognised her as a musician of “Exceptional Promise” in December 2016. \n\nBakri Hemmami is a Syrian singer and musician based in Denmark\, where he was invited to many cultural and academic events to talk about the Syrian traditional and Sufi music\, and perform his art in front of the Danish Audience. \n\nMuhammad Fadel Kuj\, lives in Kristiansand\, Norway\, is a Syrian oriental performer and conductor. He studied classical music education and performing at Homs\, where he was born. Muhammad lives in Norway since 2014 and studied musical conducting at University of Stavanger\, he is working since 2017 with Norwegian choir association as a chief conductor for choir of Søgne. \n\nTiltaket er delvis støttet økonomisk av:

SUMMARY:Concert with Simona Abdallah
DESCRIPTION:SPACE and Mela invite you to a special concert with the internationally-acclaimed percussionist Simona Abdallah concluding The Question of Syria – Doomed by Hope conference. \nSimona plays Arabic percussion\, primarily the Darbuka\, a goblet-shaped drum. She fuses her ancestral Arabic rhythms with House\, Electronica and World music. \nThe Darbuka is considered solely a masculine instrument\, and is traditionally always played by men. That makes Simona the first female musician from an Arabic background to break the tradition with an internationally acclaimed success to follow. \nJoin us to listen to Simona’s rhythms as well as reflections on her experience in a short talk before the concert! \nThe event is free and open for all. Please be on time as seats are limited.

SUMMARY:The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn collaboration with Film fra Sør\, we invite you to a unique experience with a screening of the documentary “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble”\, a mini-concert by the virtuoso Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and an exciting panel discussion about music as a universal language. \nThe question of “What is the role of music?” is the starting point for the Silk Road Ensemble\, a group of musicians from around the world who have joined forces to discuss\, compose and play music\, led by the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Silk Road Ensemble is an attempt to build bridges across cultures\, foster dialogue and show the music’s liberating power. The film about the Silk Road Ensemble is an audiovisual portrayal of music as a lingua franca. \nIn the film we join the ensemble on an incredible journey in the world of music\, where we get to see and hear tones and instruments from around the globe. Several of the ensemble members have fled their homeland in order to play the music they are passionate about. This is the case for Kinan Azmeh who will come to Oslo to play a mini-concert and participate in a conversation with Abazar Hamid “fribymusiker” in Harstad\, and Alexandra Archetti\, Festival Director of Oslo World Music Festival. Jan Lothe Eriksen from SafeMUSE will moderate the panel. \n
