SUMMARY:Masahat Screens & Sudanese Evening
DESCRIPTION:📍 Location: VEGA Scene\, Oslo📅 Date: Sunday\, September 21\, 2025🕔 Time: 15:30–17:30 (films + discussion) → followed by Sudanese Evening (food + music)🎟️ Tickets: includes access to Masahat Screens + Sudanese evening \n\nWe close this year’s Masahat Festival at VEGA Scene\, in collaboration with Oslo Documentary Cinema\, with an inspiring program that moves from film and dialogue to an evening of food\, music\, and celebration of Sudanese culture. \n\nPart One: Masahat Screens\nProgram\n\n– In Fields of Words (2022\, 70 mins) | Lebanon | dir. Rania Stephan\n– The Other Side of Beauty (2024\, 11 mins) | Morocco\, Sudan | dir. Sami Saif Sirelkhatim\n– Gaza Artists (2024\, 16 mins) – | Palestine | dir. Mustafa al-Nabih\n\nFollowing the screenings\, there will be a discussion with Syrian author Samar Yazbek. \nAbout the films\nIn Fields of Words (2022\, 70 mins) | Lebanon | dir. Rania Stephan \nA filmic dialogue between Syrian writer-in-exile Samar Yazbek and Lebanese filmmaker Rania Stephan\, asking what role cinema and literature can play in the face of war\, death\, and violence. Shot between 2013 and 2019\, the film documents the course of the Syrian revolution and civil war while exploring the question: “Can literature and cinema capture this tragedy?” Combining image\, sound\, and Yazbek’s words\, Stephan creates a poetic and political testimony of our time. Winner of the Best Film Award at the 2022 Villa Medici Film Festival. \n \nThe Other Side of Beauty (2024\, 11 mins) | Morocco\, Sudan | dir. Sami Saif SirelkhatimThe story of a Sudanese photographer who finds beauty in his homeland’s stars and landscapes\, while also facing the violence of war and genocide in Darfur. His images reveal truth to the world\, but at great personal cost—through imprisonment\, torture\, and repression. \nGaza Artists (2024\, 16 mins) – | Palestine | dir. Mustafa al-Nabih \nA short documentary produced by Arji foundation\, written and directed by Mustafa Al-Nabih. It offers a window into the lives of Palestinian artists in the Gaza Strip\, amid ongoing displacement and the difficult conditions they endure. The film takes us on a journey with three artists from different generations\, all of whom were displaced from Gaza and now live in the city of Rafah in the south of the Strip. We follow their daily lives\, struggles\, and the impact of continuous displacement on their creativity and personal lives\, through genuine human moments\, aside from the usual images of destruction. It seeks to reveal the human side of those who continue to live\, dream\, and create despite all that has been lost. This film is a cry to the world: Gaza is being annihilated\, but we love life\, and we resist with love and art. Every moment here bears the imprint of war; every smile is a victory. \n\nPart Two: Sudanese Evening: Food\, Music & Stories\nAfter films and discussion\, the festival continues with a Sudanese Evening at VEGA.\n✨ Tasting menu of iconic Sudanese dishes by chef Mohammed Mustafa.✨ Solo concert by young Sudanese-Norwegian talent Yasir Moa\, a songwriter and storyteller blending classical tunes with rhythmic\, danceable sounds. \nThis evening is curated in collaboration with Khalid Albaih and Naoures Rouissi.

SUMMARY:Lesesirkel: språk og solidaritet
DESCRIPTION:Reading Circle – Solidarity and Language\n📍 Location: Dattera til Hagen📅 Date: Sunday\, September 21\, 2025🕛 Time: 12:00–14:30🥗 Format: Reading circle + discussion over a warm brunch💸 Admission: Free and open to everyone \n\nOn the closing day of Masahat Festival\, we gather in an intimate space to reflect\, read\, and share. Continuing our tradition from previous years\, we invite you to join us for a reading circle and conversation over brunch—a moment to slow down\, connect\, and close the festival together. \nThis year we are honored to host the renowned Syrian author Samar Yazbek\, in dialogue with Rana Issa\, for a conversation on language and solidarity in brutal times. \nYazbek’s literary voice has received international acclaim and numerous prizes. With two short story collections\, seven novels\, and four works of nonfiction—translated into more than twenty languages—her writing has become central to the global understanding of Syria\, war\, and exile. \nIn her forthcoming book Memory of Loss\, Yazbek gathers testimonies from survivors of the genocide in Gaza. Initially hesitant to approach those who had lost everything—unsure if speaking of their grief could matter—she was struck by the persistence of Gazans to tell their stories. Despite despair\, they insisted on being heard. Their generosity with words and time left Yazbek with the feeling of being an eternal guest\, hoping that in return she can offer a timeless recognition of their courage and dignity. \nThrough these haunting narratives\, Yazbek raises questions that will guide our circle: \n\n\nHow can we narrate horrors that seem beyond words? When does silence better reflect helplessness? \n\n\nIn a world where human suffering is reduced to consumable fragments\, can storytelling resist erasure—not to explain or justify\, but to insist on recognition of unspeakable pain? \n\n\nHow can writing preserve truth\, memorialize injustice\, and extend solidarity to people subjected to brutality in Gaza\, Sudan\, and beyond? \n\n\nJoin us at Dattera til Hagen to close Masahat Festival with reflection\, nourishment\, and community. Together\, we ask how language itself can become an act of solidarity.

SUMMARY:Community Dinner with Thurayya Alkury and Henrik Henriksen
DESCRIPTION:📍 Venue: Kunstnernes Hus📅 Date & Time: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025\, at 19:30🎟️ Ticket price includes: \n\n\nA five-course dinner \n\n\nLive performance by Ghenwa Noiré — cross-disciplinary performer\, illustrator\, and workshop facilitator. In music\, Ghenwa explores improvisation with their electro-bouzouqi setup and vocals. \n\n\nA cultural program \n\n\n🍷 Drinks complementing the menu will be available for purchase at the bar.⚠️ Some dishes contain milk and gluten; alternatives can be provided as a double portion. \n\nMasahat’s beloved community dinner will be hosted this year at Kunstnernes Hus\, featuring a five-course menu crafted by Palestinian chef and artist Thurayya Alkury (Hummus Sapiens\, Ostara) in collaboration with chef and food writer Henrik Henriksen (MUNCH Museum Restaurants\, Ben Reddik). \nGjestebud for gjestfriheten (Feast for Hospitality) brings together culinary traditions from the Arab world and Norway\, inviting us to reflect on what hospitality means today—what it is to host\, and to be hosted—in a world where borders\, histories\, and identities remain deeply entangled. \nThe dishes and the stories you will encounter are made to inspire hope\, resilience\, and belief in our shared capacity to carry one another through difficult times. The menu draws inspiration from the writings of Munir Fasheh\, Masahat’s keynote guest\, particularly his reflections on turab (soil) as a metaphor for connection and belonging. \nSome dishes will be served on ceramic platters designed by Halvor Skiftun Digernes and food writer Andreas Liebe Delsett\, originally created for a commemorative meal honoring a persecuted Afghan writer in Bodø. The evening will also feature a performance by Ghenwa Noiré. \nAs Masahat celebrates its 10-year anniversary\, this edition of Gjestebud for gjestfriheten closes a decade with a gesture of care and continuity: a taste of Arab hospitality and Norwegian traditions\, interwoven with flavors from diaspora cultures—shared in the company of artists\, activists\, and community builders who create spaces of solidarity in our city. \n\n\nAbout the chefs\nPlayful and experimental in the kitchen\, Thurayya Alkury never follows a written recipe but instead listens to what she calls the “whispers of the ancestors.” As a Palestinian in the diaspora\, now based in Oslo\, she often serves Levantine food at festivals and community gatherings. Her greatest joy comes from storytelling\, creating spaces of healing and togetherness\, and inviting people into unconventional sensory and embodied experiences. \nHenrik Johannes Henriksen \nHenrik is a chef\, restaurateur\, and writer with a background in film and the cultural field. He has been behind restaurants such as Taco Republika\, Ben Reddik\, and Mangelsgården\, and is now responsible for all dining experiences at MUNCH. With over ten years of experience as a food writer\, he has explored ingredients\, traditions\, and food culture with a particular eye for how human history is reflected in gastronomy. \nHenrik views food as more than taste and technique—it is a language that tells us who we are\, where we come from\, and how we are connected. Through his work\, he links historical perspectives with contemporary needs\, developing concepts that carry meaning both culturally and culinarily. With his unique combination of creativity\, expertise\, and entrepreneurship\, he has established himself as a strong voice in Norwegian gastronomy. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nThis event is presented in collaboration with Rawabet — a collective initiative led by Ettijahat – Independent Culture and implemented in partnership with GEZMATAZ\, VOCE\, coculture\, Masahat\, and Transversal Project.  \n\nRawabet is supported by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) under the Creative Europe programme. SUMMARY:Masahat Community Dinner: Bread\, Dignity\, and Social Justice

SUMMARY:How to love a Homeland Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to this reading circle + brunch at Anarres Bokkafé! We will serve a sweet-salty brunch dish that is a speciality of Aleppo\, while we are reading thought-provoking literature\, discussing and learning from each other. \nOur reading circle format is simple: we share the reading material with you beforehand. In the circle\, we ask our guests to read excerpts or summarize an article before we open up for discussion. \nIn this reading circle we will start with queer Palestinian novelist and film lover\, Raji Bathish and his translator Suneela Mubayi for a short reading from Raji’s work. Raji is at the forefront of experimental writing in Palestine and the Arab world\, and he will share with us excerpts from his novels that will shake our fundamental paradigms of thinking about Palestine. \nMaha Maamoun is one of the founders of the niche publisher Kayfa ta\, of Russian philosopher Oxana Timofeeva’s pamphlet\, How to Love a Homeland. In this philosophic exercise in critical thinking\, Timofeeva explores the difficulty of reducing one’s sense of homeland to one’s country alone\, the philosophical interconnectedness of movement and rootedness\, our plant and animal souls\, and how we need to reimagine our desired\, fictional if need be\, homelands. \n  \nReading material\n\nSlavic Bodies by Raji Bathish\, translated by Suneela Mubayi\nFifty Shekels by Raji Bathish\nExcerpt from How to love a homeland? by Oxana Timofeeva\, re-published at Mada Masr (2022)\n\nWe love the intimacy of our reading circles\, and the discussion depths we get into together. For this year\, we have two hours to enjoy our Syrian breakfast and thought-provoking literature. Join us and be in the community to discuss and learn from each other!

SUMMARY:Al Rosanna Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Al Rosanna Dinner: A Levantine culinary odyssey\n\nBuy tickets لشراء البطاقات\n \nWhat does Ibsen’s “Terje Vigen” poem have to do with Al Rosanna and the great famine of Lebanon (1915-1918)? How does food history contribute to our grand national narratives? Can recipes\, food stories\, and memories offer an alternative view to our national imagination? Can we think of the recipes we use and the food we eat as a way to consider how our pasts and futures are connected beyond borders and nation states? \nThese questions and the stories around them are the backdrop of our dinner. \nJoin us at Al Rosanna Dinner for a unique culinary journey that transcends time and space. Step into a world of exquisite flavors as we sail in memory from Røst in north Norway all the way to Beirut to experience the rich heritage of the Levant. \nAl Rosanna Dinner will serve you history\, flavors\, aromas and melodies from Norway\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Palestine and Iraq. Palestinian chef Thurayya Alkury and Norwegian author and cook Andreas Delsett present their own interpretation of the myths of Al Rosanna and Terje Vigen. \n  \nYour ticket includes: \n\nSix-course dinner\nFood weaved with storytelling and music\nMeeting and mingling with Masahat festival guests*\nEntrance to solo concert by Haya Zaatry + club night (DJ Set) by Leila Moon ++ at Blå following the dinner\nPrint-out of a medieval recipe\, retrieved from one of the earliest cook books in history\n\n  \nMenu\n\nBaghdad: Cheese Boreg – savory pastry with side of bitter orange jam\nBeirut: Yalanji – wrapped grape leaves with fresh herbs\nRøst: Fish and grain snack\nAleppo: Fattet Makdous – layered eggplant with crisp bread\, minced lamb meat\, yogourt and pomegranate sauce\nSafad: Walnut Kullaj – sweet pastry served with dried apricot pure\nBack in the times: surprise medieval dish\nBring your own drink!\n\n  \nThe name of the dinner is inspired by Al Rosana\, a popular Levantine folk song which has been recorded over and over by some of the greatest Arab artists of the 20th century\, each giving it a unique flavor. The origins of the story of the song are conflicting and intertwined. \nWe were mostly inspired by Nur Turkmani’s article about Al Rosana “A famine\, a ship and a folk song that spanned borders“ where she writes how oral narratives allow us to reclaim and rewrite histories once silenced by colonialism\, patriarchy and other authoritarian powers. \nSome say Al Rosana (or Rozana) is a large ship that carried food from Italy to Lebanon during Lebanon’s great famine 1916-1918. Others say it carried smuggled wheat from Aleppo merchants to Beirut. Another version of the story revolves around a tragic love story that started in Safad\, Palestine or Mosul in Iraq and ended up in a song in Aleppo. \nSimilar to how Turkmani’s versions of Al Rosana offer new perspectives to view our interconnected pasts and futures\, so do some new critical readings of Norwegian myths\, such as the one of The Norwegian anthropologist Runar Døving who takes a new critical historical reading of the the grand tale of “Terje Vigen”. In this dinner\, we also go back further in time to think about the story of the Italian sailing captain\, Pietro Querini\, who was shipwrecked in Røst in North Norway\, and how\, as he sailed back to Venice\, he took back with him the inspiration to introduce Stockfish into Italian cooking. \nTurkmani goes on to cite Rabih Alameddine in his novel “The Hakawati\,”—or “the storyteller” as he writes: “What happens is of little significance compared with the stories we tell ourselves about what happens. Events matter little\, only stories of events affect us.” \nAl Rosana\, and the many versions of its origin\, are the inspiration for our six-course dinner. \nCome on board\, and as we indulge in the tapestry of Levantine culinary treasures\, let’s re-create and re-tell the stories of our pasts and futures.
