SUMMARY:Underdown
DESCRIPTION:In the concrete jungle that is Beirut\, Lebanon\, the outspoken taxi driver Abu Hussam is doing his best to survive. His dream is to find a roof above his head. Until that day comes\, he’ll sleep on the street and drive around the streets of Beirut with smoke pouring from the hood of his car. Beer offers some solace\, for a while. He explains why he’s happy in this hectic city: “The chaos suits me because if this country had order\, I wouldn’t be able to drink and drive.” \nElsewhere in the city\, a runaway Syrian boy named Ali has chosen to live alone on the streets. He loves the sea and his missing friend Azzam\, whom he’s waiting for day in and day out. We also meet Samya\, a whiskey-drinking woman who’s trying to finance an operation for her almost-blind mother. Just like Abu Hussam and Ali\, she’s hoping for better times\, and on occasion there’s a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. Director Sarah Kaskas composed Underdown’s powerful soundtrack as well\, which also features music by Lebanese band Kinematik. \nDirector: Sarah Kaskas \nYear: 2018 \n72 min –\nSpoken languages: Arabic. SUMMARY:Syrian Doc Days: Mellom to verdener
SUMMARY:Beirut - Underdown.
\n  \nSupported By

SUMMARY:For Sama + Live Q&A
DESCRIPTION:SPACE\, Europafilm\, Oslo Dokumentarkino and Human IDFF invite you to this online screening of Oscar-nominated\, BAFTA-winning documentary For Sama (2019\, 99 mins) and live Q&A with the filmmaker Waad Alkateab on 24th June at 19.30 Oslo time. \nHow does this work?\n\nYou can watch the film online anytime you want\, by clicking on this link.\nOn June 24th\, you can meet the filmmaker Waad Alkateab live on SPACE Facebook page and ask her any questions on the film\, or if you cannot attend\, you can send us your questions in advance and we will ask her for you.\n\nHow can YOU help?\nThe first question that people ask after watching For Sama is\, “How can I help?” Here are three ways: \n\nBear witness: many people are still confused about what happened and still happening in Syria. For Sama tells us a Syrian story of love and courage facing injustice and oppression. When you watch the film\, you help by bearing witness and preserving the narrative.\nShow solidarity: Waad Alkateab says that the hardest way for people to die is in silence. After watching For Sama\, please take a picture of yourself with a message of solidarity to show Syrians across the world that you are hearing their stories and standing with them in their struggle for freedom and democracy. Share it on social media and tag @ActionForSama. Hashtags: #forsama #actionforsama #stopbombinghospitals.\nTake action: One of the ways you can support is to give to the heroic humanitarians and medics still saving lives on the ground in Syria. As the global Coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the world\, the people of Syria need our help more than ever. The humanitarian conditions are appalling and there is always the threat of further conflict. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced and are now living in overcrowded camps\, with no chance of self isolation.\n\nYou can donate by card or PayPal online. All of the money donated to Action For Sama goes via our partners at Help Refugees\, who ensure that every penny goes directly to those working inside Syria. \nBackground on the film\nFor Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria as she falls in love\, gets married and gives birth to Sama\, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss\, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life\, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. The film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers\, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts.

The Film Syria’s Disappeared – The Case Against Assad by Sara Afshar brings forward testimonies from victims and asks the question; is it possible to prosecute the people behind these crimes? \nMazen Alhummada is one of the characters in the film. \n  \nThe Cave\n\nThis extraordinary film allows viewers to bear witness to courage and dedication in their finest forms.\n– The Washington Post \n\nØst-Ghouta utenfor Damascus var beleiret i fem år\, fra 2013 til 2018. (Syria/Danmark/USA 2019\, 95 min.) Fayyad har tidligere laget blant annet Last Men in Aleppo som var Oscar-nominert i tillegg til å motta en rekke priser. \n\nHow on earth did they manage to film this and live to tell the tale? (…) Fayyad pulls off something miraculous with “The Cave\,” which concludes with a devastating final act in flames.”\n– Variety \n\n\nKRIGEN I SYRIA – KAMPEN OM HISTORIEN \nHvis Partiet kunne strekke sin hånd tilbake i fortiden og si om den og den hendelsen at den aldri hadde hendt\, var da ikke dette enda grufullere en bare tortur og død? – 1984\, George Orwell.

SUMMARY:Songs of Separation: Film & Concert
DESCRIPTION:SPACE\, in collaboration with Oslo Dokumentarkino\, Arabiske Filmdager\, Vega Scene and Syrian Doc Days\,  invite you to a mystical evening at Vega Scene on Sept 7th. The evening starts with a film taking us on a timeless journey into the majestic world of music in Syria before the war. The film then chases the paths of three passionate musicians turned refugees as they rebuild their lives in exile. They resort to their love of Sufi music to find meaning in the aftermath of destruction and atrocity. Ibrahim\, one of the musicians featured in the film\, will join us later along with three world-renowned Syrian musicians in a Sufi-inspired concert. \nPROGRAM\n\n18.00 Wajd: Songs of Separation (Film)\n19.30 Q&A with film director\n20.00 Break\n20.30 Songs of Separation (Concert)\n\n  \nWajd: Songs of Separation (Film)\nInspired by the traditional sacred music of Syria\, filmmaker Amar Chebib travelled to Damascus and Aleppo in 2010. Six months later the revolution began\, escalating into a civil war and a humanitarian crisis. Touched by the harrowing experiences of the friends he made\, Wajd transformed into the stories of three musicians turned refugees following them over five years. \nIntimate footage of their daily lives weaved together with bittersweet musical performances\, extremely rare Sufi ceremonies\, and poetic imagery of a pre-war Syria that no longer exists. What unfolds is a cinematic meditation on loss\, yearning\, and faith. \n \nSongs of Separation \nFour prominent Syrian musicians are coming together from Turkey\, the UK\, Denmark as well as Norway to bring you a memorable evening of oriental rhythms fused with Sufi-inspired performance. The concert will revive the Sufi Levantine musical heritage\, featuring Aleppine Qudud (Qudud Halabiya) and classical Arabic Muwashahat\, a centuries-old genre spanning practices from Aleppo to Andulsia. \n\nAbout the Musicians\nIbrahim Muslimani\, now lives in Gaziantep\, Turkey\, was born in Aleppo to a family with a passion for Inshad\, a form of Sufi choral singing. In 2003\, Ibrahim joined Aleppine Inshad groups as a professional Daf player. In 2006\, he started collecting Syrian musical heritage focusing on the orally passed-down\, almost lost musical heritage and the rare Muwashahat\, Qudud\, Maqamat\, rhythms and musical manuscripts and records. In 2012\, he fled to Turkey where he further cultivated his passion for traditional music. He got a certificate in the essentials of classical Turkish music from the Directorate of Culture in Gaziantep\,Turkey. Ibrahim is still studying the essentials of musical theories\, rhythms and maqamat of the Ottoman Music\, Oud playing and ethos of music with the master Mohammad Saif Addin Zein Al-Abedin. He is a co-founder and CEO of “Nefes Institution for Arts and Culture”. \n\nRihab Azar\, now lives in the UK\, was born in Homs\, Syria to a musical family. Her father\, luthier Samir Azar made her first oud and started teaching her when she was 7 years old. She continued her musical quest later at the Conservatoire of Damascus and was taught by masters of the oud in Syria. The influences at the Conservatoire included Azerbaijani\, Arabic\, Turkish and Western classical music. In 2014\, She became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music. Rihab was the oud player of the “Syrian Female Oriental Takht” from 2006 until 2015\, the year in which she moved to the UK to study Music Education at University College London. Arts Council England recognised her as a musician of “Exceptional Promise” in December 2016. \n\nBakri Hemmami is a Syrian singer and musician based in Denmark\, where he was invited to many cultural and academic events to talk about the Syrian traditional and Sufi music\, and perform his art in front of the Danish Audience. \n\nMuhammad Fadel Kuj\, lives in Kristiansand\, Norway\, is a Syrian oriental performer and conductor. He studied classical music education and performing at Homs\, where he was born. Muhammad lives in Norway since 2014 and studied musical conducting at University of Stavanger\, he is working since 2017 with Norwegian choir association as a chief conductor for choir of Søgne. \n\nTiltaket er delvis støttet økonomisk av:

SUMMARY:The Silence of Others - No Peace without Justice
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival and Nobel Peace Center \nThe Silence of Others\nA shocking history about how the lack of justice after the dictatorship of Franco’s regime in Spain has forced hundreds of thousands of victims and their families to stay silent about their suffering\, even today. A turning point came in 2010\, when a group of courageous survivors and their families circumvented the Spanish justice system\, with aid from an Argentinian court\, where they accused former people of power for crimes against humanity. Through six nerve-wracking years we follow the court and a growing number of plaintiffs who dare to step forward. \n \nFrom Franco to Assad: No Peace without Justice\nTalk following the screening of The Silence of Others \nIn Syria\, hundreds of thousands have been arbitrary detained and forcibly disappeared\, the vast majority at the hands of the Assad regime. Driven by an uncompromising belief in human rights\, Syrians are organizing to find\, free and demand justice for their loved ones. Inspired by the many justice seekers before them from Argentina to Bosnia and Spain\, Syrians recognize that this is a lifelong struggle. \nForty years after the end of Franco’s dictatorship\, Spaniards continue to fight for justice. They find no peace in the silence of others and still navigate painful pathways to reconcile with the horrors of the past and the state-imposed amnesia of the present. \nThis panel addresses questions on confronting the past\, dealing with inter-generational trauma and reckoning with the legacy of ruthless dictators and their regimes. \nSpeakers: \nDr. Hale Hilal\, member of Families for Freedom\nAlmudena Carracedo co-director of The Silence of Others.\nModerator: Pardis Shafafi\, applied anthropologist on political violence and enduring trauma.

SUMMARY:Privacy of Wounds
DESCRIPTION:Hasan\, Mazen\, and Khaldoon are former prisoners of conscience from some of Syria’s most notorious prisons. Convinced that the three strangers will communicate openly and honestly with each other\, the director observes them from the outside of a simulated prison cell in Oslo\, using three remote-controlled cameras. \nDespite the horrors they experienced in captivity in Syria\, these men never gave up hope for a brighter future. Dalia Kury’s documentary raises awareness about how the three men apprehend their own state of being\, and what type of psychological challenges they have to deal with. Their dialogue and reflections about the war in Syria invites the audience into a soulful journey\, highlighting what life is really about. \nPrivacy of Wounds is about what survivors tell themselves to conquer their ghosts from the past. \nDiscussion after the screening\nFollowing the screening\, two of the former prisoners of conscience\, Mazen Esmaiel and Khaldoon Hawaley\, will take part in a conversation about life in and after prison\, and what it means to be a political prisoner in Syria\, together with director Dalia Kury\, and moderated by Zeina Bali. \nThis event is part of the HUMAN International Film Festival\, in collaboration with  SPACE – Syrian Peace Action Centre and Fritt Ord.

SUMMARY:Syrian Doc Days - Oslo
DESCRIPTION:Syrian Doc Days – Oslo\nWhat Syria Was and What it Must Not Be\nIn this first ever Syrian Doc Days in Oslo we will take a deep look into the Syrian society under the authoritarian rule of the Baath party and the Assad regime. \nThrough documentary films and discussions we will examine the relationship between the Syrian state and its citizens and how Syrians under the one-party rule were subjected to systematic censorship and institutionalized humiliation. \nOn the last day we will look at how Syrians in exile\, fleeing the war\, are forced into new hierarchies of oppression. \nProgram \nSaturday Sept. 8th:\n17:00 – 17:30: Introduction by Kjetil Selvik and Zeina Bali\n17:30 – 18:20: A Flood in Baath Country (2003) by Omar Amiralay\n18:20 – 18:45: Step by Step (1978) by Ossama Mohammed\n19:00 – 20:00: Talk with Ossama Mohammed \nSunday Sept. 9th:\n14:00 – 14:10: Introduction\n14:15 – 15:00: Talk with Faraj Bayrakdar and Elena Chiti\n15:00 – 16:45: Tadmor (2016)\, 103 min\n16:45 – 17:00: Tadmor’s director Monika Borgmann in conversation with Dalia Al Kury \nMonday Sept. 10th:\n17:00 – 17:15: Introduction\n17:15 – 18:40: Taste of Cement (2017) by Ziad Kalthoum \n\nTickets can be bought on cinemateket.no.  \n  \nDay 1: Saturday Sept 8th. 17:00 – 20:00\nPublic Theaters of Humiliation. The film A Flood in Baath Country from 2003 zooms in on a Syrian village that represents a microcosm of the Baath party and their rule. The leaders promised socialism but instead introduced a strict autocracy that forced people into submission through brutal force\, indoctrination and systematic humiliation that started in primary schools. Step by Step is an experimental documentary film from 1978\, by Osama Mohammed\, that shows the harsh reality of the dictatorship and the consequences for people and society. \nBetween and after the films\, Syrian filmmaker Ossama Mohammed\, director of Step by Step\, and Kjetil Selvik will talk about the Syrian society and how it is to make films under a dictatorship. \nGuests: Ossama Mohammed\, award-winning film director\, and senior researcher at NUPI Kjetil Selvik. Zeina Bali from SPACE will introduce and host the event. \n  \nDay 2: Sunday Sept 9th. 14:00 – 17:00\nFrom Schools to Prisons. Tadmor from 2016 reconstructs the infamous Tadmor torture prison in Palmyra in Syria. The film is an attempt by former prisoners to come to terms with the incomprehensible brutality and humiliation they were subjected to over years. Tens of thousands of people have died in state run prisons as a result of torture or starvation. \nGuests: Syrian poet and former prisoner in Tadmor\, Faraj Baraykdar and film director Monika Borgmann will talk before and after the screening of the documentary film Tadmor. \nDay 3: Monday Sept 10th. 17:00 – 19:00\nIn Exile. Taste of Cement from 2017 shows how Syrian workers in exile are exposed to new types of oppression. In this visually beautiful\, stylized documentary Syrian refugees in Beirut are working on the reconstruction of a city that was destroyed not that long ago\, in contrast to their own country which is being destroyed\, exposing the meaningless cycles of destruction and construction that war feeds. \n  \nDalia Al-Kury \nDalia Al Kury is a Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker. She she graduated from the Goldsmiths University in the UK in 2007 with an MA in Screen Documentary. Documentaries she has directed include “Possessed by Djinn”\, “Arabizi” and “Smile\, You Are in South Lebanon.” Her work has been broadcast on MBC Arabia\, Al Jazeera\, and Al Arabiya and has been screened at international film festivals. \n\nFaraj Bayrakdar \nFaraj Bayrakdar is a Syrian writer and award-winning poet. He was imprisoned by the Hafez al-Assad regime in 1987 on suspicion of belonging to the Communist Action Party. He was released 14 years later. Bayrakdar is author of more than six books of poetry and prose\, including “Mirrors of Absence” which taps into how the poet survives under tyrannical regimes\, the notions of “imprisonment” and identity\, and the concept of freedom. \n\nKjetil Selvik \nKjetil Selvik is Senior Researcher in NUPI’s Research Group on Peace\, Conflict and Development. He holds a PhD in political science from Sciences Po in Paris and works on struggles over states and regimes in the Middle East. Selvik har previously worked as researcher at Fafo and at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and been Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Comparative Politics\, University of Bergen\, and at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Language\, University of Oslo. \n\nMonika Borgmann \nMonika Borgmann is a filmmaker and co-director of NGO UMAM Documentation & Research. She studied Arabic and Political Sciences in Bonn and Damascus. She worked as freelance journalist in the Middle East and North Africa for over a decade. Since 2001\, she lives in Beirut where she co-founded the NGO UMAM Documentation & Research and the online archive Memory at Work. \n\nOssama Mohammed \nOssama Mohammed is a Syrian screenwriter\, cinematographer and film director. He graduated from VGIK in 1979\, where he studied at the Laboratory of Igor Talankin. His diploma film was the short documentary Step by Step. He completed his first fiction feature Stars in Broad Daylight in 1988. The title refers to Igor Talankin’s film with the same title. Deemed to be the most scathing critique of contemporary Syrian society trapped in the iron grip of the Baath regime\, the film has never been allowed a public screening in Syria. Internationally it earned the filmmaker great critical praise. His films\, Sacrifices (2002) and Silvered Water (2014) were shown at Cannes Film Festival. \n\nZeina Bali \nZeina Bali is one of the founders of SPACE (Syrian Peace Action Centre). SUMMARY:HUMAN Festival: Taste of Cement
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival and Kunstnernes Hus \nThe Film: Taste of Cement\nA portrait of workers in exile\, Taste of Cement is an empathetic encounter with people who have lost their past and their future\, locked in the recurring present. \nA poetic essay documentary about Syrian construction workers building new skyscrapers in Beirut. As they help rebuild ruined neighbourhoods in the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war\, their own houses at home are being shelled. The Lebanese government has imposed curfews on refugees and so the workers are locked in the building site over-night. Every night in their pit below the skyscraper the news from their homeland and the memories of the war haunt them. Mute and imprisoned in the cement underground\, they must endure until the new day arrives where the hammering and welding drowns out their nightmares. \nWith exquisite framing\, unorthodox editing\, and dreamlike narrative detours Taste of Cement is a daring\, imaginative and visually challenging cinematic work. \n \nThe Talk: Reconstruction for whom?\nDespite the ongoing war\, severe lack of humanitarian access in several areas in Syria and absence of accountability\, the international community has started to discuss the issue of reconstructing Syria\, but reconstruction for whom? \nWhat are the preconditions to start the reconstruction process\, and the healing of a nation in a broad sense? How do the social and political landscapes of war-torn cities contribute to shaping the national identity in the future\, if at all? What is the relationship between reconstruction and collective memories? \nThese questions will serve as a starting point for a talk with Samer Frangie\, Assistant Professor in Political Studies at the American University of Beirut.

SUMMARY:Aleppo's Fall
SUMMARY:Last Men in Aleppo - Film & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The air is still filled with dust from demolished buildings. Hands search desperately through what is now a total ruin\, moving bricks and rebars in hope of finding someone alive. We follow Khalid\, Subhi\, and Mahmoud\, three Syrians who volunteer for the organisation known as The White Helmets. Now they are doing everything in their power to find surviors in the ruins of the battle for Aleppo\, and to bring out the dead. \nIn the midst of all the misery and bomb raids\, we also get to take part in beautiful everyday moments\, such as an improvised game of street soccer or a visit to the playground. Last Men in Aleppo takes us inside the war in Syria\, but this is not a film about war. First and foremost\, it is about ordinary people’s resilience and courage. How do they live under the bombs and a looming siege? Why do they risk their lives to save others? This award-winning documentary is a captivating experience\, and a tough watch\, but a film that demands to be seen. \nThere will be a short discussion on the situation in Syria before the film and a short Q&A session with the director\, Firas Fayyad after the film – stay tuned for more details! \nThe event is a collaboration between Films From the South\, Arab Film Days and Syrian Peace Action Center (SPACE).

SUMMARY:Short Film: One Day in Aleppo
DESCRIPTION:One Day in Aleppo by Ali Alibrahim\nAfter five months of the suffocating siege and daily bombings of the city of Aleppo\, a group of children take it upon themselves to start painting colors in their city as a game in order to forget their daily struggles and to sow some optimism among the hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the city. \nThis film documents such episodes and other stories of civilians inside the besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo. More than 280\,000 civilians languishing under siege imposed by the Syrian regime forces and Russia\, cutting off the supplies of food and medicine though the daily bombardments. \nOne day in Aleppo is a film about a devastated city with no food\, no fuel\, no water\, no place to bury one’s dead\, and nowhere to treat the wounded and where hospitals no longer function. Thousands under siege expressing their hope though daily endeavors such as a small groups of kids with their colors.

SUMMARY:Syria's Disappeared: The Case Against Assad
DESCRIPTION:SPACE\, Oslo Dokumentarkino and FN-sambandet invite you to a screening of Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad followed by a panel discussion about the prospects of prosecuting war crime committed in Syria in Norwegian courts. \nAbout the film\nThis documentary tells the hidden story of tens of thousands of men\, women and children forcibly disappeared by the regime of Bashar al Assad into a network of clandestine detention centres. \nWith unprecedented access\, we follow survivors of detention\, families of detainees\, regime defectors and international war crimes investigators as they fight to bring the perpetrators to justice and desperately campaign for the release of the disappeared. \nThe film’s director Sara Afshar will introduce the film and participate in the discussion after the screening. \nAbout the panel discussion\nNorway and Germany are the only two European countries with pure universal jurisdiction over war crimes\, crimes against humanity\, and genocide – meaning that the law does not require any connection between Norway and the relevant grave international crimes committed abroad. In this panel debate we will examine the legal avenues to investigate the serious crimes committed in Syria and to prosecute the perpetrators. \n  \nAnwar al-Bunni is a Syrian human rights lawyer. He is one of the founders of the Syrian Human Rights Association and of a centre for the defence of journalists and political prisoners. As a lawyer\, al-Bunni was particularly involved in defending people who were prosecuted for expressing their opinions in non-violent ways. Al-Bunni spent five years (2006-2011) in the Syrian regime’s prisons after signing a declaration calling for democratic reform. Al-Bunni left Syria in 2014 and is now based in Berlin where he is working to build cases against war criminals in Syria and achieve transitional justice. \n\n  \nGro Nystuen is a lawyer and expert in international law. From 2005 she was Associate Professor of International Humanitarian Law/the Law on Armed Conflict at the University of Oslo and from 2008 also Associate Professor at the Defence Staff University College in Oslo. She has also worked in the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 2005. \n\n  \nSara Afshar is a journalist and filmmaker. She is the director of “Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad”. She worked for the BBC for 16 years on its current affairs programmes\, Newsnight and Panorama. \n\n  \n  \nStephanie Barbour is a lawyer and senior adviser at the Commission for International Justice and Accountability. She has served as Amnesty’s International representative to the International Criminal Court and other international tribunals in The Hague. She has also worked on cases related to crimes against humanity\, in particular enforced disappearances and sexual violence\, in relation to the 1996 to 2006 conflict in Nepal\, intercommunal violence in India in 2001 and the Rwandan genocide in 1994. \n\n  \nMark Taylor (moderator) is a Senior Researcher at the Fafo research foundation. For two decades\, Mark has worked on legal and policy frameworks applicable to conflict and human rights\, writing and advising on regulatory responses to economic dimensions of armed conflict and business and human rights. \n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nIn collaboration with Film fra Sør\, we invite you to a unique experience with a screening of the documentary “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble”\, a mini-concert by the virtuoso Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and an exciting panel discussion about music as a universal language. \nThe question of “What is the role of music?” is the starting point for the Silk Road Ensemble\, a group of musicians from around the world who have joined forces to discuss\, compose and play music\, led by the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Silk Road Ensemble is an attempt to build bridges across cultures\, foster dialogue and show the music’s liberating power. SUMMARY:Our Terrible Country - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Our Terrible Country’ takes us on the perilous journey of Yassin Haj Saleh\, a well-known Syrian intellectual and dissident\, and the young photographer Ziad Homsi who travel together in an arduous and dangerous route from the liberated area of Douma/Damascus to Raqqa in northern Syria\, only to find themselves eventually forced to leave their home country for a temporary exile in Turkey. \nWhile Yassin was detained in 1980 at the age of twenty\, and remained imprisoned for 16 years\, he is also one of the few intellectuals who participated clandestinely in the Syrian uprising since its earliest days in 2011. However\, by mid-2013\, Yassin has to leave Damascus together with his wife Samira for the liberated city of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta\, where he meets the young filmmaker Ziad Homsi. \nGiven their encounter\, the idea of a filmed portray on Yassin develops between Ziad and Ali Atassi\, a Syrian filmmaker based in Beirut. But quickly\, a deep bond develops between the Syrian intellectual and the photographer from two different generations\, based on which Ziad decides to accompany and film Yassin on a difficult and dangerous journey towards Northern Syria. And thus\, the initial portray of Yassin turns into a film about the relationship between two generations who have been involved\, each in their own way\, since the beginning of the Revolution\, and reveals respectively their hopes\, deceptions and defeats. \nEn route to liberated Raqqa\, Yassin discovers that his hometown is under the control of the extremist Islamist organization ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria)\, the organization that had kidnapped his two brothers.  Upon Yassin and Ziad’s arrival in Raqqa\, Ali joins them as to capture the developing relationship between the two. But given the brutality of both\, the Syrian regime and ISIS\, Yassin finds himself compelled to abandon his home town and to flee to Istanbul\, his place of reluctant and temporary exile\, while Ziad is arrested by ISIS on his way back south to Douma\, spending more than a month in prison\, after which he\, too\, leaves for Turkey. \nLiving in Turkey\, Yassin continues to pursue his reflection and analysis of Syrian political life. In exile and during the shooting of the film\, Yassin learns that his wife\, Samira Khalil\, was abducted in Douma on 10 December 2013\, at the same time as the human rights lawyer Razan Zeitouneh and two other activists. \nThe shooting of the film took more than a year in a number of regions in Syria and Turkey. The film\, and the fate of its characters\, represents the stages of the Syrian Revolution\, from its pacifist beginnings to its militarization\, the bombardment and destruction of cities by the Syrian Regime\, and the emergence of extremist Islamist currents and their quest to take hold of the revolution.\nProduction: Bidayyat Inhouse production\nProduction Year: 2014 \nSource: Bidayyat

SUMMARY:Palestinization of Syrian Refugees - Panel and film
DESCRIPTION:The situation for the refugees has become increasingly present in the Norwegian and European media over the last weeks and months. However\, the debate about the refugees is still being repeatedly depoliticized and reduced into a question of numbers only.\nIn this debate we will take as a point of departure the assertion that the influx of refugees is not the core of the problem; rather it is the outcome of a distorted world order.\nWe want to approach the discussion about the refugees by posing critical political and moral questions about the current global state of affairs\, immigration laws and the grave injustices that contribute to worsening the crisis\, with a special focus on the Syrian refugees’ case and the European and Norwegian response to these questions.\nWhy is the metaphor Palestinization of Syrian refugees relevant? What are the historical commonalities between the Palestinian refugees and Syrian refugees today? How do the refugee laws in neighboring countries affect the living conditions of Syrian refugees? How is the political debate in Norway framing the issue of Syrian refugees? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in the panel. \nHanne Heszlein-Lossius Medical doctor currently an intern doctor at Haraldsplass sykehus in Bergen. Henne also has a bachelor in journalism. She was part of a group of health care workers who started “Helsehjelp for papirløse” i Bergen\, a medical centre that provides medical care for immigrants in Bergen (papirløse innvandrere)\, also working there as a volunteer doctor. She started the Facebook page “Har du plass til en ekstra i hjemmet ditt” in May 2015 as a response to the ongoing debate on how Norway should help Syrian refugees. \n\n\nLine Khateeb is a Norwegian-Palestinian and was in the period 2008-2012 head of the Palestine Committee of Norway. The last three years she has been working in the Norwegian Organisation for Asylum seekers (NOAS)\, giving legal assistance and guidance to asylum seekers and doing policy work. She has a master in Middle Eastern studies from the University of Oslo. \n\n\nŞenay Özden is a cultural anthropologist and a researcher from Turkey. Her research areas include international migration\, refugees\, Turkish state’s refugee policies\, politics of humanitarian aid. She has numerous articles and reports published on Syrian refugees in Turkey. She is one of the founders of the Syrian Cultural House in Istanbul\, “Hamisch”. \n\nYassin al-Haj Saleh is one of Syria’s most prominent intellectuals and political dissidents. In 1980\, while studying medicine in Aleppo University\, he was arrested by Hafez al-Assad regime because of his political activism. He remained in prison for 16 years (1980–1996). Yassin al-Haj Saleh writes on political\, social and cultural subjects relating to Syria and the Arab world. He has authored and edited five books about Syria. He is a co-founder of the Syrian online periodical “al-Jumhuriya” and the Syrian Cultural House in Istanbul “Hamisch”. He is a recipient of the Prince Claus Award for 2012. \n\nThe panel will be moderated by Jørgen Jensehaugen. \n\n\nThe panel is followed by a screening of On the Bride’s SideA Palestinian poet and an Italian journalist meet five Palestinians and Syrians in Milan who entered Europe via the Italian island of Lampedusa after fleeing the war in Syria. They decide to help them complete their journey to Sweden – and hopefully avoid getting themselves arrested as traffickers – by faking a wedding. With a Palestinian friend dressed up as the bride and a dozen or so Italian and Syrian friends as wedding guests\, they cross halfway over Europe on a four-day journey of three thousand kilometres. This emotionally charged journey not only brings out the stories and hopes and dreams of the five Palestinians and Syrians and their rather special traffickers\, but also reveals an unknown side of Europe – a transnational\, supportive and irreverent Europe that ridicules the laws and restrictions of the Fortress in a kind of masquerade which is no other than the direct filming of something that really took place on the road from Milan to Stockholm from the 14th to the 18th of November 2013.

SUMMARY:Syria Differently – The third Syrian narrative
DESCRIPTION:“Syria Differently” – The third Syrian narrative.\n12 February 2015 18:00 at Litteraturhuset \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nWith the picture of the Syrian struggle being blurred and the focus being shifted to Islamic extremism only\, it is important to bring back to the scene the increasingly neglected aspects of the Syrian ‘conflict’. “Syria Differently” provides an alternative image of Syria and the Syrian ‘conflict’ with thematic interest in the daily lives of ordinary civilians and their experience of the destruction of their country. \nProgram: \n18:00 We Cannot Go There Now\, My Dear (43 mins)\n19:00 Panel with Ziad Majed and Maren Næss Olsen (55 mins)\n20:00 The Immortal Sergeant (73 mins)\n21:30 False Alarm (58 mins) \nWe Cannot Go There Now\, My Dear\nA documentary film by Carol Mansour (2014) \nPalestinian refugees living in Syria have been severely affected by the war. Thousands have fled Syria seeking refuge in Lebanon becoming double-refugees. It is the second or even third time that they lose everything and find themselves once more homeless and stateless. \nThis film tells part of their story; where memories are awakened between one exodus and the other\, while loss invades everything striking the very self. A story where lives are continuously being rebuilt and improvised awaiting the return. \n \nPanel with Ziad Majed and Maren Næss Olsen:\nCovering Syria: images\, terminology\, and the role of Media \nA discussion about how most Media outlets covered Syria in the last three years\, and how this coverage influenced the emotions and the political stances of large segments of the public opinion in different western countries. \n \nZiad Majed is an Associate Professor at the American University of Paris\, teaching Middle East studies and writing on Lebanese\, Syrian and Arab affairs as well as on political Islam\, political transitions and crises. \n  \nThe Immortal Sergeant\nA documentary film by Ziad Kalthoum (2014) \n \nAfter he completed his mandatory military service\, the filmmaker was held in retention as the revolution unfurled in his country. His military rank was that of a sergeant. During these times\, he would go back to his home\, located in the middle of Damascus city\, take off his military uniform and return to his normal life\, working as an assistant director with the filmmaker Mohammed Malas. To make sense of this schizophrenic situation\, he decides to take his camera and start shooting a ‘making-of’ that will eventually go beyond Malas’ film. \nFalse Alarm\nA documentary film by Firas Zbib (2014) \nIt is a documentary about revolution\, exile\, death\, hope\, victory and defeat. Told by young Syrians\, filming each other’s journeys and holding on to their cameras like they were the only proof of existence\, it is a story about a country that has become unrecognizable to its own inhabitants. \nThe documentary follows them through the laughter and the tears\, until it is no longer clear whether they are happy to have found their freedom or sad that the revolution no longer resembles them. www.falsealarm-movie.com \n \nSponsor:\n \nPartners:
