DESCRIPTION:Decolonizing the documentary has been a recurring theme at IDFA\, the world’s largest documentary film festival\, since Orwa Nyrabia became the Artistic Director in 2018. Under his leadership\, the festival has been tackling the difficult questions of representation\, equity and inclusion. \nWho has the power to represent and narrate? How can arts and cultural institutions challenge hegemonic powers\, amplify marginalized voices and foster a more equitable and representative cultural landscape? \nIn this conversation\, we ask Orwa Nyrabia to talk about his experience and vision leading IDFA. Her debut feature\, Bloody Beans\, won the top prize at the prestigious documentary festival CPH:DOX\, though to call it merely a “documentary” is reductive: described in Film Comment as an “expressionistic hybrid\,” Mari’s film is a comedy\, a tragedy about the past\, and a portrait of colonialism in the present. Shot over nine days\, with limited rehearsals and almost no reshoots\, Mari’s film is set at some unspecified point during Algeria’s War of Independence\, and explores the legacy of France’s brutal 132-year occupation of the country through the eyes and energies of children from the Bab El Oued and Bologhine neighborhoods of Algiers. The results are less “kids say the darndest things” than something akin to an hallucinatory experience\, the surreal atmosphere aided by a score from Zombie Zombie. \n\nLitanies against fear\nA short films program curated by Maha Maamoun.\nAn anxiety runs deep in these films. It animates the bodies of the protagonists circumambulating their phantom homes and this film program. Contemporary experiences of separation from home-be they physical or psychological experiences\, find their roots and resonances in narratives of forced displacement\, colonialism and rising fascisms old and new. \n\nOnly When All the Poison Has Gone (The Healing of Emily Ruete) (2023\, 18 min) dir. Doa Aly\n\nOnly when all the poison has gone (The healing of Emily Ruete) is an audio-video installation based on the memoirs and letters of Emily Ruete\, born Salamah bint Said bin Sultan\, Princess of Oman and Zanzibar (1844-1924)\, as introduced by E. Van Donzel in An Arabian Princess Between Two Worlds: Memoirs\, Letters Home\, Sequels to the Memoirs\, Syrian Customs and Usages. Emily/Salamah was prevented from returning to her homeland after eloping with a German merchant. This film seeks to turn the unconscious processes in Emily’s writing into a conscious awareness of movement\, through choreography\, to create an immersive field of healing feminine energy\, a meditation\, using her character as an effigy in a cathartic experience\, for and by her. \n\n30KG Shine (2017\, 20 mins) dir. Shadi Habib Allah\n\n30KG Shine (2017) is a video installation that examines various states of existence-object\, body and spirit – and how they exchange roles and share enmeshed forms of agency. Paying homage to a 1930s urban myth about a ghost that haunted the Old City of Jerusalem\, the film records how an elderly woman\, currently living where the fable is set\, secures her home and family heritage by leading life in confined quarters\, often at the expense of her own livelihood and health. The work also features footage of a ‘tunnel cemetery’ being constructed to house 22\,000 displaced corpses; these bodies claim presence and ownership of the place where they will lie. \n\nCapital (2023\, 17 mins) dir. Basma al-Sherif\n\nReferencing the Italian “white telephone” films of the late 1930s and 40s\, that were considered as precursors to fascist propaganda films\, al-Sherif’s latest film reflects on the grotesque via a purview of contemporary urban planning projects and their promise of comfort and docility.

But what history is that\, and how well do you really know those who came before you? Masahat invites you to take a deep dive into history writing and the struggle to own your own\, everyday history. Are you sure you actually know the whole story? \nLECTURE: “RECLAIMING HISTORY: PEOPLE\, POWER\, AND ARCHIVES” WITH KHALED FAHMY \nHow do you take ownership of your own history after being written out of it for generations? In Norway\, we have tried to find out how we can democratize history writing and cultural heritage policy to include diverse stories where the majority and minority populations are represented. Whether we have succeeded in this process is up for debate. \nIn the Arab world\, schools\, museums\, and national archives celebrate the state’s history and “great men”\, while the people’s history is erased and forgotten. Salon Marie Rose is taking place at Melahuset on Saturday 5 November from 15.00 to 22.00. \nA queer Arab exilic pop-up social gathering space in Oslo\, Salon Marie Rose is commemorating the memory of the beautiful and mountainous queer artist\, poet and writer Etel Adnan (1925-2021) who passed away in November 2021\, and takes its inspiration from her novel about the Lebanese civil war “Sitt Marie Rose”. \nAdnan’s composite and diasporic identities that include Greek and Syrian parents\, Lebanese upbringing\, American and French exiles has been a towerting inspiration for queer Arab arts and literature for more than five decades. DESCRIPTION:Does art have power during war?\nArt does have power – it cracks the ice between us; it facilitates the processing of trauma. It gives witness to all that is funny\, joyful and faced with laughter in the midst of remarkable darkness. \nDirector Iryna Tsilyk\n\nSingle mother Anna and her four children live in the front-line war zone of Donbas\, Ukraine. While the outside world is made up of bombings and chaos\, the family is managing to keep their home as a safe haven\, full of life and full of light. Every member of the family has a passion for cinema\, motivating them to shoot a film inspired by their own life during a time of war. \nThe creative process raises the question of what kind of power the magical world of cinema could have during times of disaster. How to picture war through fiction? For Anna and the children\, transforming trauma into a work of art is the ultimate way to stay human.\nThe film gives us a strong sense of what it is like to live in a war zone and how difficult it can be to leave. \nTo live between two worlds\nAs we are writing this text over 10 million Ukrainians have become refugees and more than 3 million have left the country. For the refugees who find safety abroad\, the war is in a way over\, but on the other hand it’s not. While they themselves are safe\, they are still closely connected with people living in the midst of the war. To live ” between two worlds” like this can be traumatic in itself. How are Ukrainians dealing with this and what can be learnt from the experiences of exiled Syrians? \nIn the talk after the screening we want to focus both on the situation for refugees from an ongoing war\, and on the power of documentary films to create empathy for the victims of war\, and how films can be an extremely important addition to the news media. \nPanel\n\nOleksandra Hrybenko (28) is from Donetsk\, Ukraine. She is currently working as a PhD Fellow at the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University researching the safety of women journalists reporting on the conflict in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2014 she has worked as a journalist and field producer for international media reporting on the conflict in Ukraine.\nOsama Shaheen (31) is a journalist for the Norwegian newspaper Bergens Tidende and founder of the Arab language magazine DER. SUMMARY:Ten Years After the Arab Spring - Oslo World
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago\, Arab protesters reclaimed the public space for the first time in decades\, sparking an explosion of defiant artistic and cultural expressions against the authoritarian powers. A decade on\, the reality has drastically changed in many Arab and European cities in the aftermath of exile\, violent crackdown\, conflicts\, mass displacement and dispossession of millions of Arab citizens.  In this event\, we will first screen Odorless Blue Flowers Awake Prematurely\, a short film by Panos Aprahamian. Then we will have an open discussion with Jeffrey Karam about the aftermath of the disastrous triumph of counter revolutionary forces in the Arab world. We will think together about to survive and fight back\, what possibilities of resistance still exist and what political labour can we engage to bring change about? \n  \nThe discussion will be led by Rana Issa. \n  \nDr. Jeffrey G. Karam\, Assistant Professor of Political Science\, Lebanese American University; Associate\, Middle East Initiative\, Harvard University; and EUME Fellow of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and FU Berlin. Karam is a scholar and activist between Beirut and Berlin. He is the author and editor of numerous publications\, including The Middle East in 1958: Reimagining A Revolutionary Year (London: I.B. Tauris and Bloomsbury\, 2020). Karam is likewise the co-editor of the forthcoming book\, The Lebanon Uprising of 2019: Voices from the Revolution\, which I.B. Tauris and Bloomsbury will publish in 2022. \nAbout the film\n“Odorless Blue Flowers Awake Prematurely” is the dystopia-as-documentary rather than as fiction. For many inhabitants of this world\, the apocalypse is not a future possibility but a historical reality. The short documentary essay explores Beirut’s overlooked and marginalized areas that were also affected by the blast on August 4\, 2020. These areas sit on both sides of the Beirut river’s banks. The river became a conductor for the blast’s wave due to its length and the fact that it is devoid of barriers. The film refers to the 4th of August\, 2020\, as the day the world ended. Yet\, reality in this area kept on in an apocalyptic state: a global pandemic\, deadly pollution\, desolate neighborhoods\, financial meltdown\, resource scarcity\, and food shortage.\nIt’s as if the explosion came to announce the end of the world. There is nowhere to go\, no refuge\, no scent to the flowers that grow over human limbs\, and nothing to be said for the end of the world. Even the river that never ceases to flow to the sea is dead. In this moment of staggering impotence\, how does one make a film about the end of the world? The Arna’s Children film documents the return of Arna’s son to the refugee camp. DESCRIPTION:In the concrete jungle that is Beirut\, Lebanon\, the outspoken taxi driver Abu Hussam is doing his best to survive. His dream is to find a roof above his head. Until that day comes\, he’ll sleep on the street and drive around the streets of Beirut with smoke pouring from the hood of his car. Beer offers some solace\, for a while. He explains why he’s happy in this hectic city: “The chaos suits me because if this country had order\, I wouldn’t be able to drink and drive.” \nElsewhere in the city\, a runaway Syrian boy named Ali has chosen to live alone on the streets. He loves the sea and his missing friend Azzam\, whom he’s waiting for day in and day out. We also meet Samya\, a whiskey-drinking woman who’s trying to finance an operation for her almost-blind mother. Just like Abu Hussam and Ali\, she’s hoping for better times\, and on occasion there’s a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. Våre følelser og tanker er hjemme\, mens vi forsøker å starte våre nye liv i Norge.\nVi prøver å lære et nytt språk\, sliter med å finne vår plass i et nytt samfunn\, og lærer stadig hvordan ting fungerer\, mens vi også sliter med angst og frykt for hva som skal skje med våre kjære som fortsatt befinner seg der vi dro fra dem. Vi opplever skyldfølelse for at vi har overlevd\, traumatiske minner\, og vi mangler en følelse av tilhørighet. \nMange flyktninger sier at de har fått psykiske plager etter at de kom til Norge. Å leve i fredelige Norge beskytter ikke flyktninger fra å oppleve den psykiske bagasjen de har båret med seg fra konflikter og uroligheter. Hvordan skal vi håndtere denne virkeligheten? DESCRIPTION:Det er hardt å være araber og SPACE ønsker velkommen til Underdown filmvisning om livet i Beiruts gater og en samtale med Rana Issa\, Antoine Fadel og Khaled Zaza om det som skjer i Beirut nå. \nDen 4. august ble Beirut rystet av en voldsom eksplosjon som la byen i ruiner. 2750 tonn med ammoniumnitrat hadde blitt lagret flere år i byens havn\, og til tross for at myndighetene kjente til dette\, ble det aldri gjort noe med. Dette var siste dråpe for libanesere som lenge har lengtet etter politisk forandring.\n«Alle betyr alle» ropes i gatene og symbolske galger er satt opp. Revolusjonen som startet i oktober i fjor lever videre\, og målet er at det politiske lederskapet skal falle. \nOm filmen\nI Sarah Kaskas’ «Underdown» møter vi Abu Hussam\, en taxisjåfør som gjør sitt beste for å overleve i Libanons hovedstad Beirut. Abu Hussams drøm er å finne tak over hodet\, men fram til det skjer skal han fortsette å sove på gata og kjøre rundt i gatene med røyk sigende fra panseret på bilen. Å drikke øl gir ham noe trøst\, for en liten stund. Han forklarer hvorfor han er glad i denne hektiske byen: «Kaoset passer meg\, fordi hvis dette landet hadde vært i orden\, hadde det vært umulig for meg å drikke og kjøre.»\nEt annet sted i byen møter vi den syriske gutten Ali\, som har valgt å leve alene på gata. Han elsker havet\, og savner Azzam\, en kompis som han fortsetter å vente på. Vi møter også Samya\, en whiskeydrikkende kvinne som prøver å finansiere en operasjon for sin nesten blinde mor. He was arrested and brutally tortured in a state controlled prison. Filmen vant publikumsprisen på den prestisjetunge Toronto internasjonale filmfestival i september og er nå med i Oscar-løpet. \n  \nThe Cave\n\nThis extraordinary film allows viewers to bear witness to courage and dedication in their finest forms.\n– The Washington Post \n\nØst-Ghouta utenfor Damascus var beleiret i fem år\, fra 2013 til 2018. Dette er den lengste beleiringen i krig i moderne tid. Befolkningen på flere hundre tusen var stengt inne og utsatt for massiv bombing. Det var mangel på mat og medisiner. \nAmani Ballour\, en ung kvinnelig lege\, ledet et undergrunnssykehus som tok seg av de skadde under beleiringen. \nDette er en film om enormt mot som til tider er vanskelig å se på. Men den er viktig. Når historien om krigen i Syria nå skrives vil regimet og deres støttespillere ønske å utelate slike historier som dette fordi den viser noen av de enorme krigsforbrytelsene begått av regimet mot egen befolkning. \nFilmen kjemper om en Oscar og vant publikumsprisen for beste dokumentar på Toronto internasjonale filmfestival i september 2019. \n \nThe Cave av Feras Fayyad. (…) Fayyad pulls off something miraculous with “The Cave\,” which concludes with a devastating final act in flames.”\n– Variety \n\n\nKRIGEN I SYRIA – KAMPEN OM HISTORIEN \nHvis Partiet kunne strekke sin hånd tilbake i fortiden og si om den og den hendelsen at den aldri hadde hendt\, var da ikke dette enda grufullere en bare tortur og død? – 1984\, George Orwell. \nKrigen i Syria er ikke over. Idag sitter folk fast i Idlib og er utsatt for noe av det samme som det som skjedde i Øst-Ghouta og andre steder som har vært under beleiring og bombing i Syria. \nMen likevel er kampen om narrativet allerede igang. Det syriske regimet har initiert en egen institusjon (Watan Document Foundation) som skal dokumentere krigen i Syria og samle inn historier. Sannsynligvis vil denne institusjonen forsøke å legge lokk på krigsforbrytelser begått av regimet og legge fram et narrativ som støtter Bashar al-Assads og hans regjerings fortelling om krigen. Denne historien gjengis i russisk propaganda og av andre som av en eller annen grunn støtter opp om Assads fortsatte diktatur. \nHvorvidt regimet lykkes i å gjøre sin historie gjeldende vil avhenge av om det finnes andre historier som er med å skape et bredere og riktigere bilde av virkeligheten. \nHeldigvis er vi ikke like ille ute som samfunnet i boka 1984 av George Orwell\, som sitatet over er hentet fra. Det er mange som jobber med å dokumentere krigen i Syria på en sannferdig måte og det finnes enormt mye video-\, bilde- og tekstmateriale. \nProgram\n\nInnledning ved Cora Alexa Døving som er forsker ved HL-senteret (Senter for studier av Holocaust og livssynsminoriteter) og Uğur Ümit Üngör som er førsteamanuensis i historie ved Utrecht universitet og forsker ved det nederlandske ‘Institute for War\, Holocaust\, and Genocide Studies’\, NIOD.\nQ&A etter visningen med Per K. Kirkegaard (klipper) og Peter Albrechtsen (lyddesigner).\n\nUğur Ümit Üngör har startet noe som heter Syria Oral History Project og har skapt et rammeverk for hvordan krigen i Syria kan dokumenteres. Han har blant mye annet skrevet denne artikkelen om kampen om narrativet når det gjelder krigen i Syria. Üngör kan ikke være tilstede på arrangementet på Cinemateket men har laget en kort video med sin kommentar til dette temaet som vi vil vise før filmen.

The evening starts with a film taking us on a timeless journey into the majestic world of music in Syria before the war. The film then chases the paths of three passionate musicians turned refugees as they rebuild their lives in exile. They resort to their love of Sufi music to find meaning in the aftermath of destruction and atrocity. In 2003\, Ibrahim joined Aleppine Inshad groups as a professional Daf player. In 2006\, he started collecting Syrian musical heritage focusing on the orally passed-down\, almost lost musical heritage and the rare Muwashahat\, Qudud\, Maqamat\, rhythms and musical manuscripts and records. In 2012\, he fled to Turkey where he further cultivated his passion for traditional music. He got a certificate in the essentials of classical Turkish music from the Directorate of Culture in Gaziantep\,Turkey. Ibrahim is still studying the essentials of musical theories\, rhythms and maqamat of the Ottoman Music\, Oud playing and ethos of music with the master Mohammad Saif Addin Zein Al-Abedin. He is a co-founder and CEO of “Nefes Institution for Arts and Culture”. \n\nRihab Azar\, now lives in the UK\, was born in Homs\, Syria to a musical family. Her father\, luthier Samir Azar made her first oud and started teaching her when she was 7 years old. She continued her musical quest later at the Conservatoire of Damascus and was taught by masters of the oud in Syria. The influences at the Conservatoire included Azerbaijani\, Arabic\, Turkish and Western classical music. In 2014\, She became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music. Rihab was the oud player of the “Syrian Female Oriental Takht” from 2006 until 2015\, the year in which she moved to the UK to study Music Education at University College London. Arts Council England recognised her as a musician of “Exceptional Promise” in December 2016. \n\nBakri Hemmami is a Syrian singer and musician based in Denmark\, where he was invited to many cultural and academic events to talk about the Syrian traditional and Sufi music\, and perform his art in front of the Danish Audience. \n\nMuhammad Fadel Kuj\, lives in Kristiansand\, Norway\, is a Syrian oriental performer and conductor. He studied classical music education and performing at Homs\, where he was born. DESCRIPTION:Hasan\, Mazen\, and Khaldoon are former prisoners of conscience from some of Syria’s most notorious prisons. Convinced that the three strangers will communicate openly and honestly with each other\, the director observes them from the outside of a simulated prison cell in Oslo\, using three remote-controlled cameras. \nDespite the horrors they experienced in captivity in Syria\, these men never gave up hope for a brighter future. Dalia Kury’s documentary raises awareness about how the three men apprehend their own state of being\, and what type of psychological challenges they have to deal with. Step by Step is an experimental documentary film from 1978\, by Osama Mohammed\, that shows the harsh reality of the dictatorship and the consequences for people and society. \nBetween and after the films\, Syrian filmmaker Ossama Mohammed\, director of Step by Step\, and Kjetil Selvik will talk about the Syrian society and how it is to make films under a dictatorship. \nGuests: Ossama Mohammed\, award-winning film director\, and senior researcher at NUPI Kjetil Selvik. Zeina Bali from SPACE will introduce and host the event. \n  \nDay 2: Sunday Sept 9th. 14:00 – 17:00\nFrom Schools to Prisons. Tadmor from 2016 reconstructs the infamous Tadmor torture prison in Palmyra in Syria. The film is an attempt by former prisoners to come to terms with the incomprehensible brutality and humiliation they were subjected to over years. Tens of thousands of people have died in state run prisons as a result of torture or starvation. \nGuests: Syrian poet and former prisoner in Tadmor\, Faraj Baraykdar and film director Monika Borgmann will talk before and after the screening of the documentary film Tadmor. \nDay 3: Monday Sept 10th. 17:00 – 19:00\nIn Exile. Taste of Cement from 2017 shows how Syrian workers in exile are exposed to new types of oppression. In this visually beautiful\, stylized documentary Syrian refugees in Beirut are working on the reconstruction of a city that was destroyed not that long ago\, in contrast to their own country which is being destroyed\, exposing the meaningless cycles of destruction and construction that war feeds. \n  \nDalia Al-Kury \nDalia Al Kury is a Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker. She she graduated from the Goldsmiths University in the UK in 2007 with an MA in Screen Documentary. Documentaries she has directed include “Possessed by Djinn”\, “Arabizi” and “Smile\, You Are in South Lebanon.” Her work has been broadcast on MBC Arabia\, Al Jazeera\, and Al Arabiya and has been screened at international film festivals. \n\nFaraj Bayrakdar \nFaraj Bayrakdar is a Syrian writer and award-winning poet. He was imprisoned by the Hafez al-Assad regime in 1987 on suspicion of belonging to the Communist Action Party. He was released 14 years later. Bayrakdar is author of more than six books of poetry and prose\, including “Mirrors of Absence” which taps into how the poet survives under tyrannical regimes\, the notions of “imprisonment” and identity\, and the concept of freedom. \n\nKjetil Selvik \nKjetil Selvik is Senior Researcher in NUPI’s Research Group on Peace\, Conflict and Development. He holds a PhD in political science from Sciences Po in Paris and works on struggles over states and regimes in the Middle East. Selvik har previously worked as researcher at Fafo and at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and been Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Comparative Politics\, University of Bergen\, and at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Language\, University of Oslo. \n\nMonika Borgmann \nMonika Borgmann is a filmmaker and co-director of NGO UMAM Documentation & Research. She studied Arabic and Political Sciences in Bonn and Damascus. She worked as freelance journalist in the Middle East and North Africa for over a decade. Since 2001\, she lives in Beirut where she co-founded the NGO UMAM Documentation & Research and the online archive Memory at Work. \n\nOssama Mohammed \nOssama Mohammed is a Syrian screenwriter\, cinematographer and film director. He graduated from VGIK in 1979\, where he studied at the Laboratory of Igor Talankin. His diploma film was the short documentary Step by Step. He completed his first fiction feature Stars in Broad Daylight in 1988. The title refers to Igor Talankin’s film with the same title. Deemed to be the most scathing critique of contemporary Syrian society trapped in the iron grip of the Baath regime\, the film has never been allowed a public screening in Syria. Internationally it earned the filmmaker great critical praise. His films\, Sacrifices (2002) and Silvered Water (2014) were shown at Cannes Film Festival. \n\nZeina Bali \nZeina Bali is one of the founders of SPACE (Syrian Peace Action Centre). DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival and Kunstnernes Hus \nThe Film: Taste of Cement\nA portrait of workers in exile\, Taste of Cement is an empathetic encounter with people who have lost their past and their future\, locked in the recurring present. \nA poetic essay documentary about Syrian construction workers building new skyscrapers in Beirut. As they help rebuild ruined neighbourhoods in the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war\, their own houses at home are being shelled. The Lebanese government has imposed curfews on refugees and so the workers are locked in the building site over-night. Every night in their pit below the skyscraper the news from their homeland and the memories of the war haunt them. Mute and imprisoned in the cement underground\, they must endure until the new day arrives where the hammering and welding drowns out their nightmares. \nWith exquisite framing\, unorthodox editing\, and dreamlike narrative detours Taste of Cement is a daring\, imaginative and visually challenging cinematic work. \n \nThe Talk: Reconstruction for whom?\nDespite the ongoing war\, severe lack of humanitarian access in several areas in Syria and absence of accountability\, the international community has started to discuss the issue of reconstructing Syria\, but reconstruction for whom? \nWhat are the preconditions to start the reconstruction process\, and the healing of a nation in a broad sense? How do the social and political landscapes of war-torn cities contribute to shaping the national identity in the future\, if at all? What is the relationship between reconstruction and collective memories? \nThese questions will serve as a starting point for a talk with Samer Frangie\, Assistant Professor in Political Studies at the American University of Beirut.

DESCRIPTION:Om filmen\nAleppos opprør mot regimet og senere sammenbrudd under massivt bombardement er som et symbol på den arabiske våren. Folket reiste seg i protest mot diktaturet men motstanden var splittet i mange fraksjoner og den klarte aldri stå imot volden fra regimet. \nI filmen Aleppo’s Fall reiser den norsk-syriske regissøren Nizam Najjar tilbake til sin hjemby. Bevæpnet med sitt kamera følger han en gruppe sivile som under fanene til The Free Syrian Army griper til våpen for å forsvare seg mot sin egen regjering. Skredderen Haj Khaled\, som begynner med å sy flagg til de fredelige demonstrasjonene mot diktaturet\, ender som leder av en milits av unge menn med ulike motivasjoner og agendaer. \nI kampen mot Assad og Putin på den ene siden\, og IS på den andre\, forsøker han å holde gruppen samlet og moralen oppe. Filmen følger dem fra de håpefulle dagene\, gjennom desperasjon\, død og splittelse – inntil byen faller\, og de overlevende må flykte. \n  \nSamtale etter filmen\nHva skjedde i Aleppo? Hvorfor var opposisjonen så splittet? Hva er situasjonen idag for de som måtte flykte fra byen? Hvordan er det å rapportere fra krigen i Syria? Hva får vi vite og hva får vi ikke vite? \nDELTAKERE: \n\nNizam Najjar er en norsk-syrisk filmskaper\, født og oppvokst i Aleppo. Han har tidligere laget filmen Diary from the Revolution (Dagbok fra revolusjonen) fra krigen i Libya og var regiassistent på den prisbelønte dokumentarfilmen 69 minutter av 86 dager.\nWaad Al-khateeb er en syrisk journalist og filmskaper som bl.a. rapporterte for Channel 4 under opprøret i Aleppo. Alkateab var en av de siste som forlot byen efter beleiringen. Hun lever i dag i Tyrkia\, og følger utviklingen i Syria tett. Hun mottok en Emmy i 2017 for sine reportasjer fra Syria.\nRasmus Steen er Programme Manager ved International Media Support (IMS) som jobber med å støtte lokale medier i konfliktområder for å redusere konflikt\, styrke demokratiet og fasilitere dialog.\nKaram Nachar er en syrisk skribent og akademiker. Han er en av grunnleggerne av aljumhuriya.net\, en uavhengig mediaplattform som publiserer reportasjer og analyser av konflikten i Syria og regionen. Han underviser i Midtøstenpolitikk ved universitetet Isik i Istanbul.\nZeina Bali er fra Syria. DESCRIPTION:The air is still filled with dust from demolished buildings. Hands search desperately through what is now a total ruin\, moving bricks and rebars in hope of finding someone alive. We follow Khalid\, Subhi\, and Mahmoud\, three Syrians who volunteer for the organisation known as The White Helmets. Now they are doing everything in their power to find surviors in the ruins of the battle for Aleppo\, and to bring out the dead. \nIn the midst of all the misery and bomb raids\, we also get to take part in beautiful everyday moments\, such as an improvised game of street soccer or a visit to the playground. Last Men in Aleppo takes us inside the war in Syria\, but this is not a film about war. First and foremost\, it is about ordinary people’s resilience and courage. How do they live under the bombs and a looming siege? Why do they risk their lives to save others? This award-winning documentary is a captivating experience\, and a tough watch\, but a film that demands to be seen. \nThere will be a short discussion on the situation in Syria before the film and a short Q&A session with the director\, Firas Fayyad after the film – stay tuned for more details! \nThe event is a collaboration between Films From the South\, Arab Film Days and Syrian Peace Action Center (SPACE).

DESCRIPTION:One Day in Aleppo by Ali Alibrahim\nAfter five months of the suffocating siege and daily bombings of the city of Aleppo\, a group of children take it upon themselves to start painting colors in their city as a game in order to forget their daily struggles and to sow some optimism among the hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the city. \nThis film documents such episodes and other stories of civilians inside the besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo. More than 280\,000 civilians languishing under siege imposed by the Syrian regime forces and Russia\, cutting off the supplies of food and medicine though the daily bombardments. \nOne day in Aleppo is a film about a devastated city with no food\, no fuel\, no water\, no place to bury one’s dead\, and nowhere to treat the wounded and where hospitals no longer function. Thousands under siege expressing their hope though daily endeavors such as a small groups of kids with their colors.

SUMMARY:Syria's Disappeared: The Case Against Assad
DESCRIPTION:SPACE\, Oslo Dokumentarkino and FN-sambandet invite you to a screening of Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad followed by a panel discussion about the prospects of prosecuting war crime committed in Syria in Norwegian courts. \nAbout the film\nThis documentary tells the hidden story of tens of thousands of men\, women and children forcibly disappeared by the regime of Bashar al Assad into a network of clandestine detention centres. \nWith unprecedented access\, we follow survivors of detention\, families of detainees\, regime defectors and international war crimes investigators as they fight to bring the perpetrators to justice and desperately campaign for the release of the disappeared. \nThe film’s director Sara Afshar will introduce the film and participate in the discussion after the screening. \nAbout the panel discussion\nNorway and Germany are the only two European countries with pure universal jurisdiction over war crimes\, crimes against humanity\, and genocide – meaning that the law does not require any connection between Norway and the relevant grave international crimes committed abroad. In this panel debate we will examine the legal avenues to investigate the serious crimes committed in Syria and to prosecute the perpetrators. \n  \nAnwar al-Bunni is a Syrian human rights lawyer. He is one of the founders of the Syrian Human Rights Association and of a centre for the defence of journalists and political prisoners. As a lawyer\, al-Bunni was particularly involved in defending people who were prosecuted for expressing their opinions in non-violent ways. Al-Bunni spent five years (2006-2011) in the Syrian regime’s prisons after signing a declaration calling for democratic reform. Al-Bunni left Syria in 2014 and is now based in Berlin where he is working to build cases against war criminals in Syria and achieve transitional justice. \n\n  \nGro Nystuen is a lawyer and expert in international law. From 2005 she was Associate Professor of International Humanitarian Law/the Law on Armed Conflict at the University of Oslo and from 2008 also Associate Professor at the Defence Staff University College in Oslo. She has also worked in the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 2005. \n\n  \nSara Afshar is a journalist and filmmaker. She is the director of “Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad”. She worked for the BBC for 16 years on its current affairs programmes\, Newsnight and Panorama. \n\n  \n  \nStephanie Barbour is a lawyer and senior adviser at the Commission for International Justice and Accountability. She has served as Amnesty’s International representative to the International Criminal Court and other international tribunals in The Hague. She has also worked on cases related to crimes against humanity\, in particular enforced disappearances and sexual violence\, in relation to the 1996 to 2006 conflict in Nepal\, intercommunal violence in India in 2001 and the Rwandan genocide in 1994. \n\n  \nMark Taylor (moderator) is a Senior Researcher at the Fafo research foundation. For two decades\, Mark has worked on legal and policy frameworks applicable to conflict and human rights\, writing and advising on regulatory responses to economic dimensions of armed conflict and business and human rights. \n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nIn collaboration with Film fra Sør\, we invite you to a unique experience with a screening of the documentary “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble”\, a mini-concert by the virtuoso Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and an exciting panel discussion about music as a universal language. \nThe question of “What is the role of music?” is the starting point for the Silk Road Ensemble\, a group of musicians from around the world who have joined forces to discuss\, compose and play music\, led by the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Silk Road Ensemble is an attempt to build bridges across cultures\, foster dialogue and show the music’s liberating power. The film about the Silk Road Ensemble is an audiovisual portrayal of music as a lingua franca. \nIn the film we join the ensemble on an incredible journey in the world of music\, where we get to see and hear tones and instruments from around the globe. Several of the ensemble members have fled their homeland in order to play the music they are passionate about. This is the case for Kinan Azmeh who will come to Oslo to play a mini-concert and participate in a conversation with Abazar Hamid “fribymusiker” in Harstad\, and Alexandra Archetti\, Festival Director of Oslo World Music Festival. Jan Lothe Eriksen from SafeMUSE will moderate the panel. \n
